🌾 Kidepo Valley National Park is Uganda's most remote and rugged wilderness, spanning 1,442 square kilometres in the far northeast corner of Karamoja.

📜 Origin & History

  • 🏛️ Establishment: Originally gazetted as a game reserve in 1958.

  • 📜 National Park Status: Formally designated as a national park in 1962 (the year of Uganda's independence).

  • 📛 Name Origin: Named after the Kidepo River valley—"Kidepo" comes from the Karamojong verb akidep, meaning "to pick up," referring to traditional palm fruit harvesting along the riverbanks.

🌟 Why It Is Famous

🌾 Africa's True Hidden Wilderness: Globally celebrated for its vast, untouched savannah plains framed by rugged mountain ranges, hosting species found nowhere else in Uganda—including cheetahs, ostriches, caracals, and bat-eared foxes.

🏞️ Main Attractions

  • 🌾 Narus Valley: The park's primary wildlife hub featuring permanent water holes that attract massive herds of buffaloes, elephants, and lions during dry seasons.

  • 🌴 Kidepo River Bed & Kanangorok Hot Springs: A wide, dry sand riverbed lined with Borassus palms, leading to natural hot springs near the South Sudan border.

  • ⛰️ Mount Morungole: A 2,750-metre peak rising above the plains, home to the indigenous Ik cultural community.

  • 🦁 Lonyili & Mount Lomej Ridges: Scenic highland ridges offering challenging hiking trails and panoramic views across Karamoja.

  • 🏘️ Karamojong Manyattas: Traditional pastoralist homesteads outside the park boundaries exhibiting rich cultural heritage.

🦁 Key Activities

  • 🚙 Savannah Game Drives: Morning and late afternoon wildlife drives through Narus Valley targeting lions, leopards, cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, and massive buffalo herds.

  • 🥾 Mount Morungole Hiking & Ik Community Visit: A full-day mountain trek to encounter the isolated Ik people, one of Africa's smallest ethnic groups.

  • 🚶 Guided Nature Walks: Foot safaris along the Narus Valley riverbanks and Kakine circuit with an armed UWA ranger guide.

  • 🦅 Birdwatching: Guided birding trips targeting over 470 recorded species, including the Ostrich, Abyssinian Roller, Kori Bustard, and Egyptian Vulture.

  • 🥁 Karamojong Cultural Encounters: Village visits to traditional Manyattas (bomas) to experience traditional dances, craft making, and pastoral lifestyles.

  • 🌙 Night Game Drives: Spotlit evening drives (inside park limits) to view nocturnal predators like caracals, bushbabies, and leopards.
