In 1999, Koen Vanmechelen, a Belgian artist, embarked on a project to bring together chicken breeds from around the world into a gloriously diverse cosmopolitan chicken population. He talked to me about the history of the project and the philosophy behind it at his studio in Genk. With us was Olivier Hanotte, a livestock specialist who is helping to use Vanmechelen’s cosmopolitan chickens to boost the resilience and productivity of village chickens in Africa.
