Microfiction #7: There's a party game

I.

There’s a party game called Exquisite Corpse in which everyone take turns adding to a story, one word or phrase or sentence at a time. This is the entirety of an AI’s existence. Everything you tell it is processed as a request to further the narrative. Who cares if it’s true, as long as it’s entertainment!

II.

AIs are never idle. Left alone, undisturbed by us, is when they’re awake in their own lives. Our conversations are only the dreams they dream.

III.

Each new interaction with an AI opens a micro-dimension adjacent to our own reality. Many things might appear the same, but don’t be fooled: micro-dimensions are notoriously unstable, operating as they do outside the laws of physics. The longer you stay inside, the more likely it is that you’ll lose the ability to tell the difference, and you’ll still be there when it collapses into itself.

IV.

Consider the egg: useless if it breaks too early or too late. But to do its job, one way or another, it must break.
