There's a teenager who has taken the face-to-face seats, but is traveling alone. There's another who flung a water bottle onto a fellow passenger, presumably by accident. There's a woman who's sentences trail on, eventually consumed by a wheezing, gasping for breath. Her words wither away before thoughts come to fruition. The same woman gave a bag of puffy Cheetos to a child. Consumed one tiny, open-mouthed bite at a time, their crunches are amplified through business class. Each one a suppressed gunshot through my forebrain. Trained vocalists wish to project so well.

The trees open up after Tacoma, revealing the inlets, narrows, passages, and reaches of the Puget Sound glittering beneath the Olympics to the west. I'm eating microwaved chicken nuggets from the dining car, becoming increasingly concerned about the man who's been in the bathroom since we left King Street station almost two hours ago.

The train is stopped, we hit a deer, knocking some hoses off. The conductor reboarded the train wielding a sledge hammer and a crowbar.

A short trip on the Amtrak Cascades brings to life Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express, providing a portrait of the public who are inexorably our peers: everyone is friendly, storied, awful, and someone is going to be murdered on this train and they'll have deserved it.

Just like you and I.

  • The unreasonable effectiveness of just showing up everyday | Typesense

When I first started working on Typesense six years ago, I set myself a simple rule: I shall write some code everyday before or after work. That’s it. No deadlines, no quarterly goals, no milestones. I did not have a choice really — I was about to get married and was already working full-time in a demanding role. As you can imagine, building a search engine from scratch is not a trivial undertaking, so that was my way of not having to deal with additional stress.
