Total Refusal is a constantly evolving piece for solo drums. Debuted in 2025 and inspired by the book “Soundtrack to the Revolution: Free Jazz and Leftist Nationalism in Quebec 1967-1975” by Eric Fillion, the piece is a meditation on the current state of the world and what we can do about it- specifically improvised music as a change-agent. This work advocates a “total refusal” to accept current lawlessness/hatred/anti-LGBTQ+ vitriol/racism/anti-immigration as a given. With a non-traditional drumkit setup featuring a whiskey barrel drum (which I rescued from a used instrument store in Montpelier, Vermont), Total Refusal is a durational piece which utilizes repetition and extended techniques and sounds like an organic-ritual-transcendent-meditation. Recommended for fans of taiko, Babatunde Olatunji, Jon Mueller, Marina Abramović and Fakir Musafar.
