Return of thld (r/l/D #2)

Words:

(thoughts while walking home in the rain from the Greg Davis / Lea Bertucci show 10/13/2022)

There's a type of Noise music where the volume is wielded like a weapon- sometimes the source sound is inconsequential- the music and the performance works because the volume hits you on such a primal raw visceral physiological way that your whole circulatory system and pulmonary system- your heart and your lungs and guts- are changed and temporarily taken over by the volume of the music. There's a completely different noise music that is more cerebral- where some of the sounds that you're hearing you have to discover on your own, and nothing is given to you- the experience lies in finding- and organizing- the sounds by yourself. There's still other music that has both the cerebral and the physical- where the volume is not wielded so much as a weapon but as another instrument. Walking home in the rain from the Greg Davis / Lea Bertucci show tonight my one critique of Greg’s set is that the volume was not utilized in a way that was able to physically penetrate my sphere. I mean the music itself is nothing if not cerebral-Greg literally programmed the album he was performing using sacred maths and sacred prime numbers- it was beautiful and beyond moving- yet there were times where I wish it was twice the volume.

On the other hand Lea Bertucci’s set was nearly flawless. I knew her from work she had done in the past with woodwinds- I'd recently revisited an album of hers featuring cello and magnetic tape and clarinet which was very minimal and very slow in unfolding. The music she played tonight was so incredibly different than that- it centered around manipulated voice a la Laurie Anderson- combined with layered flute and found sound/field recordings played from an old cassette player. She manipulated her voice in real time in a way that I couldn't quite wrap my head around- and the juxtaposition of that with moments of layered flute and a quadraphonic sound system (I could not keep track of where the sounds were originating) led me into a headspace that was very welcomed and relaxing and beautiful.

My Music:

November 11th sees the return of the le duo (thld), my improv/psyche/experimental rock band. We are VERY EXCITED to welcome into the fold Remi Russin (they/them) on bass. Remi has been taking the local scene by storm with their experimental/shoegaze/pop solo work & as a member of bands such as Community Garden.
