Issue 25: Organizing Events, QZZF, + More!

Organizing events for the Co-op with a cute graphic, tabling at Queer Zest Zine Fest, Cartoonber pages, the Queen of Horror, and more!

Jessi Eoin's logo repeated in rainbow colors showing a speech bubble with a pen, a paintbrush, and cane in it next to the words, "Jessi Eoin. Comics. Illustration." in a handwritten font.

Hello hello, friends and good folk!

Happy November! I hope you had a fun Halloween if you celebrate or a nice night if you don’t, and I hope November is filled with good company and good food for you all 💖

IN THE STUDIO

Graphic announcing the event titled 2024 Cartoonist Co-op Holiday Gift Exchange! It's an event going from December first to January seventh, and it takes place on the Co-op Discord and Forum. It's a one hundred percent virtual event open to all members. The art shows the Co-op mascots Inkling and Nibford (an inkwell and dip pen, respectively) exchanging gifts in a colorful setting. Nibford magically leans through the screen of a laptop to extend their gift to Inkling who runs towards them with a gift in their own hands, too. Around the scene are festive items like a mug of hot chocolate with marshmallows, iced sugar cookies with sprinkles, and holly, as well as an open sketchbook showing panels of Inkling and Nibford being very affectionate with one another.

These last couple of weeks have been ridiculously busy, but I managed to squeeze in a graphic of our mascots Inkling and Nibford for an upcoming Co-op event I’ve planned for December 1 to January 7 called the Co-op Holiday Gift Exchange!

It’s going to be a Co-op-wide event for all of our members to share digital gifts with one another, like artists offering line art for colorists to practice on or writers to offer scripts for artists to create and so on. My hope is that it will encourage a sense of community while offering opportunities for Co-op members to practice their craft and teamwork. I’m super excited to launch this in a month and hope to make it an annual event!!

Speaking of events, I’ve also organized a NYC Co-op Cookie Exchange for those Co-op members in the NYC area (or who can get here lol) that I’m also very excited for. I’m super looking forward to meeting some of my Co-op neighbors offline!

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

Thanks to some uh, questionable, service at CVS recently, I learned that Novavax, a protein-based COVID vaccine (as opposed to an mRNA COVID vaccine), requires most people to get two doses, spaced at least 3 weeks apart, potentially more. (Immunocompromised people may need more than two doses; check with your doctor!)

So if you’re going to be getting or have already received the Novavax shot, be sure to check with your medical providers about getting that second shot! You can reference this CDC document for details.

Page 3 of that same document also shares what length needle you need to ensure you receive the full dosage of the shot. Fat people at my size require a 1.5” needle, while smaller folks may need anywhere from 0.5” to 1” needles. Be sure to check this with your vaccine provider!

You can also get Novavax at the same time as your flu shot, btw. Good luck and stay safe out there! 💖

NOVEMBER ONGOINGS

Graphic announcing the 2024 Queer Zest Zine Fest, held online November 9th to 17th. Colorful, citrusy illustrations show several characters of various ethnicities drinking juice boxes and saying what's happening during the fest: affinity meetups, workshops and presentations, queer stories, and zines diy.

I’m excited to share that I’ll be participating in this year’s Queer Zest Zine Fest, a 100% virtual event running November 9-17, featuring a virtual artist alley, live-streamed workshops, and social meetups!

This will be my first time tabling at an event, and I’m looking forward to the experience and to meeting all the cool people tabling, presenting events, and attending there. So if indie zines and comics are your thing, come check us out next week! 💖

A colorful illustration of a nude Black femme with long braids, sitting on a blue powerchair while wearing a pink high flow nasal cannula and hugging themself happily with their eyes closed. They're surrounded by the bright green leaves and ruby red anthurium flowers and holding one in their hand against their chest. They have lots of stretch marks on their belly.

CARTOONBER

I’m happy to report that Cartoonber is going strong, and it’s been so fun to see everyone’s work coming to life! I love the range of interpretations of the prompts and seeing how folks work together and hype each other up. Truly so wonderful! If you’re interested, you can check out the Co-op’s BlueSky page to see some of the comics that got shared with us 👀

I also have my team’s first page to share with you all— this was my first time coloring someone else’s work and as part of a team, and it was such a fun experience! It’s a little intimidating but also empowering to be trusted as part of the process, and I’m pleased with how our work turned out.

4 panels over dark purple gutters with dust layered over them. A green-haired person is climbing up into an attic, pulling off a sheet revealing a smaller, similar looking person inside of a box. Dialogue reads,

Credits: Script by Joan Zahra Dark, line art by Lief Bennett, colors by Jessi Eoin, and letters by Bruce Delo

Page two should be going up tomorrow on social media, and our next posting dates after that are November 16 and November 30, so you‘ll see more then!

You still have plenty of time to join us for Cartoonber if you’re interested! You don’t have to be a Co-op member or have experience making comics to participate and have fun with us this fall 😄 Check out the graphics below and join us on social media!

Two colorful graphics side by side announcing the Cartoonist Cooperative's art challenge called Cartoonber. The first illustration shows the Co-op's mascot Inkling (an inkpot) playing in a corn field as autumn leaves fall around them. The Co-op logo is next to and above text that reads,

ESIMS FOR GAZA

Illustration of Cartoonist Cooperative's mascots, Inkling (an ink bottle) and Nibford (a dip pen), as drawn by Juan Gee against a blue background. Inkling holds up a SIM card decorated in the style of the Palestinian flag with a determined face as they yell with Nibford, “E-SIMS FOR GAZA!” Text above reads, “Donate e-SIMs and get art from us!”

Art by Tan Juan Gee

Someone recently redeemed a ticket with me through the Cartoonist Cooperative’s eSIMs for Gaza campaign, and I was super glad to give them some of my art in exchange! That reminded me that I should remind y’all that you can get my Comics + Art Collection #1 which has fifteen micro comics and fifteen illustrations (along with two disability pride stickers if you’re in the U.S.) if you donate an eSIM!

We have a ton of other Co-op members also participating— you should check out what folks are offering and consider donating an eSIM today!

COMMUNITY FEATURE

Cover for the comic Resenter by Gigi Murakami. As if emerging from a chrysalis, a Black woman seems to be torn into two down the middle of her body while another version of herself appears underneath.

Fellow Co-op member and Queen of Horror Gigi Murakami‘s comic RESENTER up on Viz free for you to read! With enough readership, there’s a chance that this could get picked up for a series, so if you’re looking for a good horror comic and the chance to help out a cool creator, go give this a read!

RECENT READS + FAVORITES

All the comics I’ve had time to read the last couple weeks are submissions for the Nib + Ink Fest 2025 (as of writing this, I’ve made it through 86 of the 130 we’ve had submitted!), so I can’t share those, but here are some of my favorite things from the past few weeks:

Eating: Korean beef tacos and my recipe for super fluffy vanilla sugar cookies
Watching: Scariest House in America + Life (2017)
Listening: Chillhop Essentials Fall 2024

How about you? What have been some of your favorite things lately?

Hope the start of the month is kind to you 💖 Thanks for reading!

A graphic shows an illustrated self-portrait of Jessi Eoin with a rainbow and colorful stars next to text. They are a fat, white person with wavy brown hair and blue eyes, furiously scribbling on their tablet. The background is an abstract pink and yellow. Next to their profile image is text that reads, "Jessi Eoin (they/them). Jessi is an illustrator who loves making, reading, and talking about comics, and they have come to accept that this is probably how they would be lured by a kidnapper."
