Happy September!

Jessi Eoin's logo repeated in rainbow colors showing a speech bubble with a pen, a paintbrush, and cane in it next to the words, "Jessi Eoin. Comics. Illustration." in a handwritten font.

Hello hello and happy September!

Ahhh, I'm so eager for the crisp fall air to arrive soon-- sweater weather always makes me so happy 😌✨

Also, before I keep going, did you know I'm on BlueSky now? Let's hang out there! It's been so lovely so far, it's the first time in a long time that I've enjoyed social media again since I don't have to battle terrible algorithms there πŸ₯²πŸ©·

Also also! I am creating a Discord server! I'm figuring it out in my downtime, but I wanted to let you know because I hope to be sharing it in the next few months, and I'm excited to use it as a space for us to hang out, if that's something you're interested in. So keep an eye out for an invite to that!

Silver Sprocket Pitch Update

I'm very pleased to announce that I made that deadline for Silver Sprocket just in the nick of time! 😁 I originally planned to share the entire pitch packet with y'all here, but I realized that if I did that, then the comic would be ineligible for the ShortBox Comics Fair that I plan to submit to in fall as a backup in case Silver Sprocket rejects it.

So I shall have to save that particular packet of goodies for another day, I'm afraid πŸ₯² I think it should be safe to show you just a snippet, though-- my favorite panel!

A colorful panel from the comic Sheryl Doesn't Work Weekends: A Hard Lesson Learned for an Aspergillus Fae. It shows a looming shadow of someone wearing a broad-rimmed hat against the front door of a bookstore called The Nose Inn. The scene shows a pink shop with bright yellow windows lit from inside, a strong contrast to the purple shadows of the evening shading the trees and bushes outside. There are some Halloween decorations in front of the store and in the windows: a grinning jack-o-lantern, a witch's broom, and some ghosts, bats, and spiders. A few autumn leaves blow past in the wind. There's a sign outside the door that reads, "Scary Story Time at 4 PM!" and decorated with more ghosts and spiderwebs. Text boxes on the panel read, "Meanwhile... The Nose Inn. Tuesday. 7:22 PM."

#MicroComicSummer

Yesterday was #MicroComicSummer on social media! I've largely been absent on socials the last couple weeks while working on the Silver Sprocket pitch, so it was nice to be able to come back with a full comic to share. If you haven't heard, #MicroComicSummer is an online event hosted by Hiveworks where artists share a four page comic on August 31st.

Basically, it's a ton of free micro comics to check out on social media, so check out the hashtag! Great way to give your brain a treat during a lunch break or after work πŸ˜„

Here's my contribution to this year's event:

Content warning for nudity, anxiety, ableism, trauma, negative self-talk, and emotional abuse. You can skip past the 4 page comic for more of the newsletter following it!

Page one of a mini comic titled "A Long Eviction." The color palette is of desaturated purples. Panel 1: A fat, nude figure (Jessi) with long wavy hair pulled out all around them stands with their arms clutched to their chest. Text in boxes around them read, "I... don't feel like I'm a good person. Sometimes I think I am, but mostly... I think I'm a bad person." Panel 2: Jessi sitting in front of their computer, speaking with someone with curly hair on the monitor. Text reads, "I'm in therapy, but it's still hard." Panel 3: Jessi's hand illustrating Panel 1. Text reads, "Even as Β I draw this, I think...." Panel 4: Three thought bubbles with text that read, "You just want attention. You just want people to feel sorry for you. No one will like this because they know you're a bad person."
Page two of a mini comic titled "A Long Eviction." The color palette is of varying shades of purple with pops of white and yellow. The background is a very dark purple, almost black. Panel 1: Jessi stands surrounded by speech bubbles that press up against them from every angle, each filled with negative comments about Jessi. Text reads, "A lot of things seem to confirm my worst suspicions. The text in the speech bubbles read, "You just want attention. You just want money. You don't care. You're just too sensitive. Don't ever talk to MY family again, bitch. You're the only one who ever has a problem. Autistic people are fucking evil, man. I'm not being defensive, you're just being really aggressive. Lazy. You're such an asshole. Mean. You're unreasonable. You look scary when you don't smile. You're so rude." Jessi presses their hands to their ears to block them out. Panel 2: Jessi struggles to slam a door closed on the speech bubbles. Text above reads, "I do my best to..." Panel 3: Text continues, "...block out these words...." Jessi is in a room with their eyes closed and headphones covering their ears. In the background, the knob wriggles as if something is trying to enter. Panel 4: The text finishes, "...but...." An ominous figure opens the door with a creak and stares inside, their eyes glowing yellow as they stare.
Page three of a mini comic titled "A Long Eviction." There is only one panel, in dark shades of purple with a pop of yellow in the center emphasizing a character looming in the doorway of a brain. Their shadow is cast long and takes up the center of attention. Text reads, "She Never Leaves." A slinking set of speech bubbles inside the shadow read, "You're a bad person. You deserved it, Jessi." The name Jessi appears to have extra letters after it that have been scratched out. All around the figure, emitting from the brain, are more interconnected speech bubbles with text. They read, in no particular order, "No one likes me. I'm a terrible person. I'm not a kind person. I'm such a burden. I'm worthless. I take up too much space. I'm so rude. I'm such an asshole. I always do everything wrong. I should know better. I should be better. I don't do enough for others. I'm so selfish. I'm mean. I ask for too much. I'm not patient enough. They're too nice to say how much they dislike me."
Page four of a mini comic titled "A Long Eviction." The color palette becomes much brighter here, in shades of yellow, pink, purple, and a bit of light green at the end. Panel 1: An eviction letter on a pink slip. It reads, "Eviction Notice. Effective Immediately. Who: This bitch. Address: My brain. When: Now, get out!" Text in a speech bubble reads, "I'm working on evicting her, though." Panel 2: A brain illustrated with a person opening a door from it on the side and pointing out as if to say, "Get out!" Panel 3: Jessi carries several speech bubbles in their arms. There are so many that they squish their face. Text reads, "My therapist reminds me regularly that my mother's-- and others' words-- are not MY words. Panel 4: Jessi throws the speech bubbles into a dumpster on fire. Text reads, "It's just their opinion, and opinions aren't objective truth. Panel 5: Jessi writes many words on a large board. There are green plants around them. Text reads, "And I'm working on making new words for myself." The words Jessi writes on the board are, "Brave. Passionate. Funny. Serious, but also lighthearted. Considerate. Organized. Caring. Curious. Creative. Tries their best. Kind."

September Offerings

Here's what's up on the blog for you to check out this month, with more coming soon!

Interview with Teo Hernandez DuVall

Here's an excerpt of my interview with the very kind and chill Teo Hernandez DuVall:

Jessi: If money and time were no issue, what do you think you would do?

Teo: I would love to luxuriate in more drawing time. I have a graphic novel idea based on my heritage and favorite genres that I would love to bring to fruition in a way not tainted by the pressures of capitalism.

The rest of the time I would be cultivating my city apartment garden and growing spider plants, cast iron plants, California poppy, and herbs for my spouse’s kitchen!

10 Comics with Fat Characters

In celebration of August AdiPOSE, I've compiled a list of 10 comics featuring fat characters! There are some really cute fat comics out there!

More Comics Please! Issue #6

✦ Read The Hazards of Love: Book 1: Bright World if you're in the mood for a modern day Mexican fairy tale with a deliciously dangerous edge and queer Brown love.

✦ Read A Lightness if you're looking for a short and sweet story of searching for that place you belong, a fat, queer main character, and a sprinkling of magic.

✦ Read Something Is Killing the Children, Vol. 1 if you're eager to get into the Halloween mood or if you just love gory, creepy stories and haunting visuals.

In the Studio

The studio is taking a bit of a break this month-- in our home, September is time for fall cleaning! My partner and I have an annual commitment to decluttering and moving all the heavy furniture around at least once a year to get things clean for the colder months. It's a nice way to greet the mice that will be moving in for winter πŸ˜‚

I also have plans to use this month for setting up more blog posts, focusing on some marketing, brainstorming comic ideas for the ShortBox Comics Fair application coming up next month (omg, October is NEXT MONTH, Y'ALL!!), and my volunteer work with the Fat Artist Network and the Cartoonist Coop. For art, I plan to work on a standalone illustration and that short horror comic I've been struggling to make time for completing! lol

As a treat for busting my ass on the comic pitch last month and in my anticipation for fall, I ordered some squirrel and hedgehog fabric I've been lusting over for about a year now, so I hope to also make some time for that in my studio this month (the studio doubles as my sewing spot lol).

Look how cute this fabric is! πŸ₯ΊπŸ©· I'm very excited to turn it into another skirt when it arrives!
