The Art and Science of Spending Money
Behavioral finance is now well documented. But most of the attention goes to how people invest. Welch’s story shows how much deeper the psychology of money can go. How you spend money can reveal an existential struggle of what you find valuable in life, who you want to spend time with, why you chose your career, and the kind of attention you want from other people.
The psychology of money is fascinating to me. I recently had dinner with a group of buddies who are now all parents. We talked about how certain experiences in our past shaped who we are now, for better or for worse. I mentioned that one experience that I recently recognized and learned to let go of.
I was around 7 or 8 and for my birthday, I received money from a relative. I was so excited that I started rubbing it all over my face. I was a kid and I was super excited! My grandma immediately told me to stop and said, “Don’t do that, money is dirty.” I had a negative connotation with money. And it stuck with me for most of my life.

This section will no longer feature funny or interesting tweets. This is because I’m no longer active on Twitter. To keep it short, ever since Elon took ownership, he’s ruined the company and most of the people I follow are now on Mastodon. You read more about how he’s ruined Twitter here.
You can find me over on Mastodon. Let me know what should take the place in this section.
