** EDITION — AUG 2019
Hey, I’m Jared Henriques. You are receiving this because you signed up for my weekly newsletter. If you didn’t do that, it means someone else signed you up. Sorry about that.
** August 2019
Hey Friends. Hope everyone’s summer is going well. Me and my family just got back from the cottage and have been enjoying the weather. I can’t believe that we’re into August, but here we go. A project that recently completed was a rebrand for my friend Evan’s barber shop, Burrow Barbering. We went through the branding process and wanted to deliver him something that will allow him to scale and expand over time as he desires to do. You can read the case study here (https://renga.co/work/burrow-barbering-co)
We have been working on same amazing projects over the last couple months and I am so excited to share them with you guys. One that should be launched within the next couple weeks is a company called Lunie. They are in the crypto currency space and the majority of the tech that they are building is well over my head. It’s been fun to brand this project because they do not at all want to feel like a crypto company. They wanted to feel almost like your quirky fun science teacher. The website is almost done and I’m excited to launch, but I can give you a sneak peek at their brand guidelines (https://lunie.renga.co/) .
** The Creative Rise
A friend of mine Joey Speers has just launched a business called The Creative Rise Mastermind (https://www.creativerisemastermind.com/) . This mastermind is an 8 week course for anyone who is looking to start a creative business. I have the pleasure of being the guest expert during the second week. I’ll be teaching all about branding and how to find your brand identity. Should be a blast to help some first time entrepreneurs grow in their business.
** Backpack As Home Base
Earlier this month I had a very long day in the city. After about 6 meetings, I had a dinner meeting and then heading to the TFC game. Very early in the morning it rained pretty hard and I spent the whole day damp and smelly. This made me realize that I need to start treating my backpack like my home base. I have since grabbed a small toiletry bag that is always in my backpack. I also have an extra tshirt and a snack. I don’t know why it has taken me so long to prepare myself to live out of my backpack.
Do you have any essentials that you keep on you at all times? I’d love to know what I should be adding to my bag.
** Finding the Sales Cycle
As we have been growing Renga we have been constantly thinking about the long term. Everything that we do is about building our reputation and network because we all have many more years ahead of us. The one question that has been plaguing our team was how to take care of the short term cash flow?
It’s an interesting challenge to try and find short term sales as you continue to cultivate long term relationships. It seems that through our inability of being able to solve the short term problem that some of the sales cycle has caught up. As Matt and I were talking about this, he had lamented that our original strategy was right and that all of these things we had tried in the mean time felt like a waste of time.
The thing is that we handle all of our relationships with the care and investment of nurturing long term relationships. Our attempt to explore various techniques and sales channels have lead to meeting some amazing new contacts that will hopefully be life long partners.
All of this to say that even if you believe your approach is the right one, it’s worth exploring alternatives to see where it might take you.
** Setting Expectations
I was recently listening to a Tim Ferris podcast with Chip Conley (https://tim.blog/2019/06/20/chip-conley/) and he was talking about his emotional equations. One of the equations that really resonated with me was:
Disappointment = Expectations - Reality
I think this really resonated with me because I have recently been thinking a lot about how we might layout our processes better so that we can hand a client a clear road map with all the check in dates. In client services I have learned that it’s on you to set the expectations early. To communicate timelines, check-ins and what potential roadblocks or changes may be ahead. Allowing your client to create their own expectations is only setting them up for disappointment.
The key is to make reality as close to or better then the expectations you outline. Of course this seems obvious after it’s been laid out, but it struck me as I heard it!
In this podcast Chip also talks about his habit of bullet pointing lessons he’s learned that week on every Friday afternoon. This is a practice that I am interested in starting.
** Fantasy Hockey
One of my favourite past times is fantasy hockey. I am in a league with 11 other people and this league is called a dynasty league. What this means is that the team we have is the team that follows us through every season. Not only do we have a 20 man roster but we also have a 20 man farm team full of freshly drafted rookies into the NHL. We had our draft last week and it’s always one of my favourite nights.
I think the reason that I am so drawn to fantasy hockey is it feels like where economics meets psychology. I absolutely love to trade, trying to find out everyone’s biases, what they over value and what they under value. Playing to that and how you might be able to compose a team is way too enjoyable to me.
** What I’ve Been Enjoying
Music Jordan Rakei’s new album Origin Ari Lennox’s album Shea Butter Baby Chris Larocca’s debut album Suadade I guess this is where I say that I really did not like Chance’s new album. Sorry.
Food I have recently been grabbing a handful of arugala, another handful of baby spinach and drizzling some olive oil, balsamic vinegar and honey on top. This has been the simplest salad to add to nearly any meal, big fan.
Apps We’ve moved all of our screen design work over to a tool called Figma (https://www.figma.com) . It’s amazing. A free design tool that can be used in browser with real-time collaboration. Are.na (https://are.na) has been such a valuable tool for collecting and sorting reference material for all our design work.
Books I’ve been listening to Atmoic Habits (https://www.amazon.ca/Atomic-Habits-Proven-Build-Break/dp/0735211299/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=atomic+habits&qid=1564710004&s=gateway&sr=8-1) . A really practical book that addresses behaviour change. I’ve been enjoying listening to this while driving. I need to keep going through it to implement some of the wisdom found.
** My Home Screen
Here is my home screen for the month. A couple small changes but nothing major. I’m trying to get my health back on track. Starting a business and starting a family at the same time has not been the wisest move when it comes to my physical health. Over the last year and a half I have been sitting way to much, and eating poorly.
Streaks is a very simple app that allows me to track some habits I’m trying to get going. I think this is the only change to the home screen this month, have you come across any new tool or app that you think I might be excited about? If you think anyone you know might enjoy this, I’d love if you shared this with them! Thanks for reading, you’re neat.
Jared
