“Is it for charity?”
As some of you may already know, I’m cycling to the Fringe in Edinburgh this year.
You mainly know this because I’ve been telling as many of you as possible, so I have no opportunity to make a humiliating U-turn.
Touring cycling has vanished from the popular consciousness over the decades, though inevitably there is something of a craze for it at the moment on TikTok.
And so I find myself explaining that, no, it’s not for charity. It’s just a holiday.
“Well you should do it for charity anyway. I’ll sponsor you.”
I find this a bit weird. I mean, sure, it’s a long way, and there will be some hills where I will swear a lot and regret I ever had the idea.
But it’s still a holiday. I don’t offer to sponsor you when you say you’re going for a week in the Algarve.
But I am an extremely malleable sort, and the JustGiving page for my swim in the Serpentine last year is still open.
The Alzheimer’s Society is a very laudable organisation who would love your money, if you need the excuse me of me cycling a long way to give it to them.

I shall be doing daily updates on my trip over on my blog, if you fancy following my progress and inevitable, hilarious reversals of fortune.
Next Level Sketch
Talking of Edinburgh, it’s Next Level Sketch tonight, with our own brilliant sketches plus Fringe previews from Garry (not Freddie) Starr and Tarot Comedy. I can’t make it as I’ll be in a Travelodge in an unpretty little market town, but you should go. It’ll be great.
