Each week, we offer the last word to JMC students. This week’s One More Thing is from Hanaa Yoo (CCP ‘25) & Amaya Aten (CCP & Arts & Humanities, ‘25).

Hanna Yoo and Amaya Aten are part of the JMC OJEI team leading the EMBRACE event series. This Wednesday’s event focuses on mental health:

“I joined the JMC Office of Justice, Equity, and Inclusion because truthfully, I did not have a welcoming experience within JMC during my first year and I don’t want my fellow students to have this same experience. While working in the college, my sense of belonging has changed because of the DEI efforts JMC faculty, staff and students have made to make me feel welcomed; more specifically, the community building that is created during OJEI’s Embrace Dialogues. Our next Embrace Dialogue will focus on the importance of mental health. As an APIDA/A woman, I often need to ‘validate’ my mental health because mental health is not (majority of the time) acknowledged in the APIDA/A community. So, having these types of conversations is important to me as these opportunities contribute to my sense of belonging within the college.” — Hanaa Yoo (CCP ‘25)

“EMBRACE is meant to be a space to build the JMC community as a collective, building relationships and promoting dialogue between staff, students and faculty. Upon beginning my role as a Programming Coordinator with the Office of Justice, Equity, and Inclusion, my vision was to establish a foundation for student engagement and connection, which I felt was lacking upon entering Madison. EMBRACE is on its way to achieving that! We'd love you to join us for some de-stressors, bead-making, CAPS and community building on Oct. 9 — the day before World Mental Health Day (and my birthday on Oct. 10)! Hang out and join the community.” — Amaya Aten (CCP & Arts & Humanities, ‘25)

Register to attend this Wednesday’s EMBRACE event in Club Spartan via Eventbrite.
