Internship Spotlight: Prayag Shankar
Prayag Shankar is a JMC senior double-majoring in Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy and Economics with a minor in Philosophy. He shares his Summer 2025 internship experience below:

“This summer, I interned at the Michigan Department of State’s external affairs team. This team is dedicated to bridging the gaps between MDOS and the various diverse communities Michigan has to offer. A crucial part of this work includes bringing the Secretary of State's resources to communities that face barriers to getting licenses and IDs. Additionally, the external affairs team works to engage students in the voting process and empower students as leaders of the next generation of Michigan voters. To that end, my role as an intern included reaching out to marginalized communities across the state and setting up mobile office visits and community listening sessions where MDOS can connect directly with community members and hear their concerns. I also helped create programming for the 2025 Student Voter Summit through which MDOS connects with various Michigan universities and student leaders to create a space where students can step up as leaders.”
Learn more about JMC’s field experience requirement on the JMC website. Students interested in planning their internship can connect with JMC Field Experience Coordinator Lauren Michalak (schedule an appointment with her via student.msu.edu).
