Field Experience Info Session
Sept. 16, 4 to 5 p.m. in 332 Case Hall. This workshop will cover what satisfies the JMC field experience requirement and explore internship opportunities and resources available to students. This session is especially geared towards those who are planning to complete the requirement in the next few semesters. (A second session will be held on Sept. 23.) Sept. 17, 1 to 4 p.m. at the MSU Broad Art Museum. Your voice, your vote! Still need to register? Stop by on National Voter Registration Day to get signed up. Constitution Day Lecture: Disinformation, Demagoguery, and the First Amendment
Sept. 17, 5 to 7 p.m. in 338 Case Hall. JMC welcomes Dr. Charles Zug, Kinder Assistant Professor of Constitutional Democracy and Assistant Professor of Political Science in the Truman School of Government and Public Affairs, for the 2024 Constitution Day Lecture. Zug's talk will try to show why demagoguery has all but ceased to be intelligible to us — even in cases where it is obviously relevant, like misinformation in the 21st century. Study Abroad Info Session: Dubai Winter Break
Sept. 18, 4 to 5 p.m. in 332 Case Hall. Join Dr. Russell Lucas to learn more about The Globalization of Consumerism and Community study abroad opportunity in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Students will travel to Dubai during Winter Break (Jan. 3-11, 2025) to explore the cultural, social and political effects of contemporary globalization in Dubai. Study Abroad Info Session: Global Development in South Asia Summer Program
Sept. 19, 4 to 5 p.m. in 332 Case Hall. Students in this program will travel to India and Sri Lanka in May-June 2025 and be introduced to real-world development problems and to potential solutions to long-standing and emerging challenges. Leonard Gilman Lecture – Two Tribes: The Real-Life Story of a Jewish-Native American
Sept. 23, 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the MSU Main Library. Emily Bowen Cohen will discuss the childhood memories that inspired her debut graphic novel. Emily traces the history of her Jewish and her Muscogee ancestors, exploring the similarities and differences. Climate Change: Impacts and Resilience Across Kerala, India
Sept. 24, 5 to 6:30 p.m. in 332 Case Hall. Climate change impacts are multifaceted, affecting environment, resources and resource user livelihoods in varying degrees. Climate anomalies affect recruitment, species composition, phenology, distribution and migration of fish resources. Dr. Shyam Salim, Principal Scientist at the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, will share the experiences of the diverse climate resilience adaptation and mitigation strategies evolved over the years in India. OJEI Grand Rapids Trip
Sept 28, 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Join the Office of Justice, Equity, and Inclusion for bowling and a visit to Art Prize in Grand Rapids. The group will leave Case Hall at 10 a.m. and return by 6:30 p.m. Space is available for the first 30 students who respond. 2024 JMC Stratford Festival Trip: Twelfth Night
Sept. 29. Join James Madison College for a day trip to Stratford, Ont., to see Shakespeare's comedy "Twelfth Night". Ticket purchase ($15) includes your "Twelfth Night" show ticket, bus travel to and from Stratford and snacks on the bus. Madison Academic Diversity Initiative (MADI)
Applications are now open for Madison Academic Diversity Initiative (MADI). MADI will connect students to academic resources and networking through mentorship with Madison faculty. Throughout the fall and spring semesters, participants will develop professional connections with JMC faculty, attend monthly cohort meetings, and complete a community service project. JMC Undergraduate Research Assistant
Dr. Russell Lucas is seeking up to three research assistants to assist with the research project “The Effects of 30 Years of Debating the Clash of Civilizations.” Successful candidates will read academic journal articles that use Samuel Huntington’s Clash of Civilizations concept, then categorize the articles and record notes on arguments and methodologies to create a dataset. $15/hour (up to 20 hours/week). YOURE(in)CHARJ: Undergraduate Research Fellow Position
YOURE (In) CHARJ is a student-led, community-based participatory action research (CBPAR) initiative focused on the intersection of climate justice, racial equity and health. This program offers students the opportunity to actively engage in research that directly impacts local communities in rural and urban areas. Federal Health Policy Internships Info Session
Sept. 24, 3 p.m. in 337 Case Hall. JMC’s Field Experience Office will be hosting an information session with Dr. Christa-Marie Singleton, Chief Medical Officer for the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Dr. Singleton will discuss and answer questions about opportunities for students to participate in a remote internship with the OPM working on health policy matters for Spring 2025 and Summer 2025. Michigan Senate Internship Opportunity
The Office of State Senator Stephanie Chang is seeking fall interns. Interns will provide assistance in the areas of legislation, communications, constituent affairs and general office management. JMC Learning Lab
The JMC Learning Lab officially opens this week:
Writing Center: Need help working through an assignment, essay or presentation? Stop by the JMC Writing Center (341 Case Hall) on Mondays and Thursdays (7 to 10 p.m.) and Tuesdays and Wednesdays (4 to 10 p.m.) throughout the academic year. These drop-in sessions offer peer-to-peer support from upperclassmen across JMC’s majors.
JMC Math Center: The JMC Math Center consultant, Dheeraj Thota, will be available on Mondays from 5 to 7 p.m. via Zoom (passcode: 115170) and on Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. for in-person sessions (341 Case Hall) beginning Sept. 12.

JMC Community Counselor: Drop-In Counseling
James Madison has a dedicated counselor on staff, Courtney Brown, available for drop-in counseling on Mondays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. (S363 Case Hall). Courtney is available for free, confidential conversations to discuss any mental health concerns you may be facing. Visit MSU CAPS for more information about on-campus mental health resources.
