JMC Career Exposure Program

Apply to participate in JMC’s Career Exposure Program to Chicago by March 24.

Applications are now open for JMC’s Career Exposure Program to Chicago (May 4-10, 2025). This year, students will meet with at least 14 different alumni in their places of work, attend an alumni mixer and participate in a variety of cultural/group activities. A “Careers in Law” panel will feature practicing lawyers and current law school students. The program fee (approx. $875) will cover lodging with breakfast, transportation and some group activities. All student levels (from first year to those who graduate in May) are welcome. Apply via Qualtrics by March 24. Contact Karissa Chabot-Purchase (kcp@msu.edu) with questions.

The Hundred Years' War on Palestine: A History of Settler Colonialism and Resistance, 1917-2017
March 10, 6 p.m. via Zoom. Rashid Khalidi is Edward Said Professor Emeritus at Columbia University. He was President of the Middle East Studies Association, as well as an advisor to the Palestinian delegation to the Madrid and Washington Arab-Israeli peace negotiations from October 1991-June 1993. in 342 Case Hall. Examine the intersection of hip hop and public policy, as well as the history of women throughout the evolution in the genre. This collaborative event will be hosted by the EMBRACE program and JMC Women of Color (JMCWOC), as well as JMC students Nahlia Moncrief (Social Relations and Policy ‘26) and A’lvinia Spicer (SRP/Social Work ‘26). Attend the JMC Open Mic Night on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

JMC Open Mic Night
March 12, 6 p.m. in the JMC Library (332 Case Hall). Students, faculty and staff are invited to attend a night of music, poetry and performance. Political Theory Colloquium
March 13, 3 p.m. in the JMC Library (332 Case Hall). Join the second meeting of the JMC Political Theory Colloquium to discuss Yuan Yuan’s paper “When Immigration Law is Unjust but Legitimate” (read paper via One Drive | MSU login required). Yuan Yuan is an assistant professor of philosophy at UC San Diego. Yuan specializes in ethics, political philosophy and philosophy of law, emphasizing the interface between them. Prof. Guido Parietti and PTCD senior Logan Skinner will serve as discussants.

JMC Internships 101
March 13, 4:30 p.m. in 334A Case Hall. Learn about how to search for and apply to internship opportunities. The discussion will also include tips on making the most of an internship, professional behavior and norms, when and how to use an internship to satisfy the field experience requirement, and why internships are useful and important. Speed Networking with JMC Alumni
March 14, 12 to 1:30 p.m. in Club Spartan (338 Case Hall). Practice and refine your networking skills in a small-scale, supportive setting and connect with Madison graduates using their degrees in an array of professions. Over refreshments and appetizers, participants will have a series of short, small-group discussions with alumni. Space is limited. RSVP via Handshake

Information Resilience with Dr. Megan Threats
March 14, 3 p.m. in Club Spartan (338 Case Hall). Dr. Megan Threats (she/her) is an assistant professor at the University of Michigan School of Information, and an affiliate at the Center for Racial Justice at the University of Michigan Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. In this talk, Dr. Megan Threats will discuss information resilience. Information resilience is a strengths-based theoretical model that describes the protective and promotive information practices of multiply marginalized communities that focus on meeting individual or community-centric goals despite intersectional stigma and discrimination. She will discuss how recent legislation may impact the information resilience of multiply marginalized communities in the U.S., and strategies for a path forward. Learn more via JMC Events

Enrollment for the fall semester will open on March 17, which makes now a great time to meet with your academic advisor to plan your schedule. View hours for express advising in Room S328 Case Hall or make an appointment:

  • Login to student.msu.edu and click on the “Academic Progress“ tile

  • Select “Advising/Tutoring Appointments” from the left navigation 

  • Complete the required fields and review appointment information 

  • Select “Book It!” to book your appointment

    Students who would like to meet with Asst. Dean of Undergraduate Affairs Jeff Judge can schedule an appointment by contacting Kristie Hess (hessk1@msu.edu).

JMC Research Showcase
The 2025 James Madison College Research Showcase will be held on Friday, April 25, in the JMC Library. This event is an opportunity to showcase your scholarship and creative activity from JMC/MSU classes. Madison students interested in participating are invited to submit an abstract of research by Friday, March 14.

ASMSU General Assembly  
Interested in representing JMC and advocating for students? The General Assembly of the Associated Students of Michigan State University (ASMSU) is the legislative body representing undergraduate students by introducing debates and votes on issues. Election packets for Spring elections are now open! Candidates must submit a brief bio and gather the required number of signatures by March 17 at 4:30 p.m. Access the election packet to apply and learn more via 2025 Spring GA Election Form

JMC Community Counselor: Drop-In Counseling
CAPS Connect will be back in Case Hall every Monday (1:30 to 3:30 p.m.) this semester! CAPS Connect provides a place to talk about what's on your mind during a brief, free, confidential conversation with a CAPS counselor. It is a great way to receive one-time support and expert suggestions, or get to know CAPS staff and the services available to you. To sign up and see all location/scheduling options, click here.

JMC Career Peers Office Hours
JMC’s Career Peers, Taylor Toth (PTCD, SRP '26) and Justina Giglio (SRP '25) hold weekly office hours in Case Hall. Schedule a meeting with them through Handshake or email jm.career@msu.edu with questions on resumes, cover letters, internships, interviews and law/grad school applications. Spring Semester office hours are Mondays and Wednesdays, 2 to 4 p.m., and Thursdays from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.

JMC Express Academic Advising
Need to meet with an academic advisor? JMC’s Advising Center in 328 South Case Hall is open daily for express drop-in advising:

  • Monday-Thursday: 12:30 to 4 p.m.

  • Friday: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
