First-Year Mentor Program: Spring Mentee Application
Attention: First-Year Students
JMC’s First-Year Mentor Program has open spots for first-year students who would like to be mentees. Mentees will be paired with an upperclass Madisonian, who will serve as a role model, support system and resource agent. Apply via Google Forms by Jan. 20 at 9 a.m.

JMC Student Senate: CCP Caucus Open Seat
James Madison Student Senate is looking to fill a seat on the CCP caucus for Spring '25. The students of the JMC Student Senate are an integral part of the James Madison College community and, therefore, hold an active role in deciding its policies and priorities. JMC Student Senate seeks to promote intellectual, educational and social opportunities available to this community by representing the interests and addressing the concerns of the student body by involving students in the decision-making process pertaining to their own education and the future of the college. In the spring semester specifically, all senators work to put on a Gala to promote a selected charity. Martin Luther King, Jr. Advancing Inclusion through Research Award
Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s unwavering commitment to justice, dignity, and the empowerment of all people, students in MSU’s residential colleges are encouraged to submit research papers and creative projects that reflect these values. Submissions might address themes of civil and human rights, the pursuit of social justice, and the voices and experiences of communities historically impacted by inequality. Ignite Talks MSU: Speaker Open Call
The MSU Museum CoLab Studio is looking for 10 passionate MSU students to each give an Ignite talk on their research. Regardless of your student level or field, Ignite talks are creative ways to communicate one big idea in five minutes. This is an opportunity for students to showcase and build their communication skills, confidence, recognition and make a broader impact. Apply by Jan. 16. Learn more and apply via Ignite Talks Form

JMC Express Academic Advising
Need to meet with an academic advisor this week? This week (Jan. 13-17), JMC’s Advising Center in 328 South Case Hall is open for express, drop-in advising from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Find more information, including whether you should use express advising or schedule an appointment, on JMC’s website.
JMC Community Counselor: Drop-In Counseling
James Madison has a dedicated counselor on staff, Courtney Brown, available for drop-in counseling on Mondays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. (S363 Case Hall). Courtney is available for free, confidential conversations to discuss any mental health concerns you may be facing. Visit MSU CAPS for more information about on-campus mental health resources.
Spring 2025 Research Opportunity
Spring MART: Dilemmas in American Health Care
The Madison Academic Research Tutorial (MART) was created to provide a student-centered and in-depth research experience. MART is a faculty-led small tutorial (two to three students) that explores a topic of interest. Students register for MC 410 for 1-2 credits with weekly meetings to be determined by faculty and student availability.

Wednesdays with Madison: New Year Vision Boards
Jan. 15, 6 to 8 p.m. in the JMC Library (332 Case Hall). Think of this New Year Vision Board event as a strategic planning session meets creative exploration. You'll have access to craft materials, thoughtful prompts and dedicated space to map out your aspirations for the year ahead. Learn more via the JMC website
Conversations on Antisemitism and Islamophobia
Fridays (Jan. 17, Jan. 24, Feb. 7, Feb. 21), 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the JMC Library (Jan. 24 session in Club Spartan). These conversations are open to MSU students, faculty, staff, administrators and trustees. There is no cost participate and attendance to all in-person sessions is requested. Complimentary lunch provided. Registration is required via Google Forms.
JMC Human Rights Data Science Lab Info Session
Jan. 20, 7 p.m. via Zoom. The JMC Human Rights Data Science Lab is recruiting for the Spring semester. The Lab is focused on providing opportunities for students to engage in policy-relevant research associated with the investigation of human rights violations and the development of specific career related skills associated with database construction/management, data visualization, remote sensing, and open-source research. The information produced by the Lab is sent to organizations investigating human rights violations and other issues of international concern. The lab has worked on projects associated with the International Criminal Court, United Nations, Amnesty International, and otherNGO actors. The lab is a great experience that harnesses rigorous academic research to produce policy relevant information and opportunities for engagement with public affairs. Students interested in joining the lab are invited to attend this Zoom recruitment meeting (password: JMC 2020).

Jan. 21, 5 p.m. in the JMC Library (332 Case Hall). Join MSU Career Services as we welcome our regional Diplomat in Residence, Ken Roy, who will be on campus to offer an array of information on State Department internship, fellowship and career opportunities. Roy, is a U.S. State Department Diplomat in Residence at the Ford School, where he serves the North Central Region. Register to attend via Handshake
Malcolm X Muslim Studies Community Forum
Jan. 21, 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Erickson Hall KIVA. The 4th Annual Malcolm X Muslim Studies Community Forum will feature Ilyasah Shabazz, author, activist and daughter of Malcolm X. This hybrid event will include a lecture and book signing. Attend in person or register to attend the livestream via Eventbrite.
JMC Skills Seminar: Resume and Cover Letter Development
Jan. 22, 6 p.m. in the JMC Library (332 Case Hall). Need a refresher (or starting point) on drafting a resume or cover letter to help get you that opportunity you’ve got your eye on? This interactive workshop will offer you the opportunity to gather best practices and lightly revise your own professional documents (so feel free to bring them along printed out or on your computer/tablet). Attendees can also use our time together to begin working on documents from scratch. Register to attend via Handshake
