Fall Graduation Speakers

Attention: Students Graduating in December
Seniors graduating this fall have the opportunity to be one of two speakers for MSU’s Fall 2024 Commencement program. This is a chance to share your MSU stories and words of wisdom for the departing class. Apply by Oct. 25 at 5 p.m. via Qualtrics.

Graduate Programs in International Affairs
Oct. 22, 12 to 1 p.m.
in 332 Case Hall (JMC Library). Recruiters will be visiting from Georgetown's Walsh School of Foreign Service, Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs, Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, and Tufts' Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy to offer overviews of their IR-focused programs and advice for candidates interested in applying for graduate studies. JMC Skills Seminar: Cultivating Meaningful Professional Relationships 
Oct. 23, 6 to 7:30 p.m. in 332 Case Hall (JMC Library). Join JMC’s Career Services and Field Experience Offices for the next Skills Seminar: Cultivating Meaningful Professional Relationships. After completing this workshop, students will be able to: articulate the value of maintaining a professional online presence to support career exploration and internship/job searches, describe approaches to curating and managing a professional online presence, and much more. RSVP and learn more via Handshake

MSU vs. U of M Pregame Tailgate 
Oct. 25, 6 to 8 p.m. at Holden Dining Hall. Enjoy a pregame tailgate to celebrate the MSU vs. U of M game. There will be tailgate-themed food, games, a raffle for prizes and DJ. Cost is two combo exchange points/student. Learn more and sign up via Eventbrite 

Skills Seminar: Networking Advice + Practice with Madison Alumni 
Oct. 30, 6 to 7 p.m. virtually via Zoom. Join JMC’s Career Services for a virtual (and low-stakes!) panel discussion featuring Madison graduates who are eager to help you practice your relationship-building skills and offer their own insights on mastering the art of networking. JMC Education Abroad Fair 
Nov. 1, 1 to 3 p.m. at Club Spartan (338 Case Hall). Meet with professors to learn more about faculty-led programs, talk to staff about semester-long programs and international internships, and chat representatives from the Peace Corp, Fulbright, Boren Scholarship, Critical Language Scholarship and other opportunities. Wednesdays with Madison: Post Election Debrief 
Nov. 6, 6 to 7:30 p.m. at JMC Library (332 Case Hall). Join Madison faculty members and fellow students for a round-table discussion and reflection on the results of the U.S. presidential election. This event will provide perspectives on the election results from all four majors, including Professors Louise Jezierski, Linda Sayed, Jordan Cash and Matt Zierler. in Club Spartan (338 Case Hall). Gather with students, faculty and staff to share a meal in advance of Thanksgiving. You will also receive updates on the college’s fall event programming and student support initiatives and have an informal opportunity to share feedback on what you’d like to see next semester. First-year students are encouraged to all upcoming Meet the Majors events beginning on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. in the JMC Library.

First-year Madison students are invited to meet with faculty and learn more about the college's majors and minors at this upcoming event series. Students are strongly encouraged to attend all Meet the Majors sessions before declaring a major.

Student Organization Events

Blackout Cafe Takeover
Oct. 24, 6 p.m.
in Brody Cafe. The Blackout Takeover is a meet-up organized by the W.E.B Du Bois Society. This event's purpose is to bring unity and inter-generational connections between Black students, faculty and staff while creating a safe space, within the Brody Dining Hall, for Black students. Opportunities

Election Defenders De-Escalation Training
All Voting is Local Michigan is hosting an in-person and virtual De-Escalation Training sessions for people involved with or interested in Election Day and post-Election Day activities. These sessions will help prepare individuals for situations that may require conflict resolution skills in coordination with the Election Defenders. Events are nonpartisan. Register to attend via Google Forms

Field Research Opportunity 
Open to all students wanting to participate in a research experience surrounding the partisan impacts on school board elections. Short training days will be held to learn about the project and practice using surveys with voters (Oct. 28 to Nov. 1). On election day (Nov. 5), come survey voters with an exit survey at various locations and learn about partisanship in local school board elections. Apply by Oct. 25. Spring 2025: Washington D.C. Social Science Research as Documentary Filmmaking 
Join MSU College of Social Science in Washington D.C. during Spring Break 2025. The study-away program explores cultural diversity and sustainability in the greater D.C. area through food cultures. Apply by Dec. 15. Learn more and apply via College of Social Science Study Away

JMC Academic Advising: New Drop-In Hours
Madison’s Drop-In Advising Center (328 South Case Hall) has updated hours for the remainder of the Fall Semester: 

  • Monday: Closed

  • Tuesday: 12 to 4 p.m.

  • Wednesday: 12 to 4 p.m.

  • Thursday: 12 to 4 p.m.

  • Friday: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

JMC Community Counselor: Drop-In Counseling
James Madison has a dedicated counselor on staff, Courtney Brown, available for drop-in counseling on Mondays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. (S363 Case Hall). Courtney is available for free, confidential conversations to discuss any mental health concerns you may be facing. Visit MSU CAPS for more information about on-campus mental health resources.
