Academic Advising at JMC
The Express Advising Center in 328 S. Case Hall will be open Monday to Thursday this week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for any student who needs assistance with their fall schedule or enrollment concerns. No appointment necessary! Learn more about the JMC Express Advising Center and how to meet with your advisor.
Thanks to investment from the Provost's Office, our Drop-in Advising Center (328 S. Case Hall) and Career Services/Field Experience Offices (329 S. Case Hall) received an update over the summer. Stop in at both offices to say hello when you’re back in Case!
JMC Community Counselor: Drop-In Counseling
JMC has a dedicated counselor on staff, Courtney Brown, available for drop-in counseling on Mondays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in S363 Case Hall beginning Sept. 8. Courtney is available for free, confidential conversations to discuss any mental health concerns you may be facing. Visit MSU Caps Connect for more information.
Writing Center at JMC
Need help working through an assignment, essay or presentation? The Writing Center at JMC in 341 Case Hall will be open Monday-Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning Sept. 15. Learn more on JMC’s website.
Career Services & Field Experience Offices
JMC’s Career Services and Field Experiences offices are located in 329 S. Case Hall. Career Advisor Karissa Chabot-Purchase and Field Experience Coordinator Lauren Michalak are available to support you throughout your time at the college. Events

JMC Human Rights Data Science Lab Recruitment Meeting
Sept. 2, 6:30 p.m. via Zoom. JMC Human Rights Data Science Lab is recruiting for this semester. Students engage in policy-relevant research associated with human rights violations and develop career-related skills including database construction/management, data visualization, remote sensing and open-source research. Interested students can sign up via Google Forms and attend the Sept. 2 recruitment meeting via Zoom (password: JMC2020).

Lunch Chat with Dean Thies
Sept. 3, 12 p.m. in the JMC Library, 332 Case Hall. Lunch Chats are an opportunity for Madison students, faculty and staff to connect over a meal (food is available on a first-come, first-served basis). This event will feature a brief Q&A discussion between Dean Thies and Jahshua Smith, JMC's outreach and recruitment coordinator. You can submit your questions via Qualtrics or connect with Dean Thies during the event.
Ask Us Anything: Grad & Law School
Sept. 9 at 5 p.m. in 329 South Case Hall. This casual “Ask us Anything” session will help answer all of your questions about the graduate/law school exploration and application process. (Added Bonus: Students can earn credit toward JMC's LinkedIn Career Readiness Badge by participating in this program.) Register to attend via Handshake
Stuckman Lecture Series: The Food Economy in the Headlines
Sept. 9, 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Kellogg Center Auditorium. NPR’s chief Economics Correspondent Scott Horsley will unpacks the forces shaping the food economy. This event is free and open to the public. Registration required via ANR Events Management System.
Daniel Rosenthal Legislative Intern Workshop & Luncheon
Sept. 10, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Anderson House Office Building, Lansing. This workshop focuses on internship best practices and future career opportunities for those with legislative experience. Learn more via JMC and contact Lauren Michalak (michal34@msu.edu) to register.
Field Experience Scholarships
Applications for JMC's Field Experience Scholarships for the Fall 2025 Semester are now open (applications due Sept. 5, 2025). Students who are planning to do their field experience (internship for credit via MC 400 & 401 or approved equivalent) in Fall 2025 are eligible to apply. Learn more on JMC’s website.
Opportunities

Fife Fellow Program
Fife Fellow Program invites first- and second-year JMC students to explore ideas central to contemporary liberal democracy. Participants read and discuss important texts in the history of political economy and constitutionalism like the people who inspired the program's name: Adam Smith and James Wilson. The goal of the program is to deepen understanding of the central ideas and institutions of liberalism and to enable citizens to pursue freedom. Applications due Sept. 8. MC 412 Short Course: Foreign Intelligence, the Law, and Changing Technology
JMC is offering a unique one-week course (Sept. 29 to Oct. 2, Mon. to Thurs. from 6 to 7:30 p.m.) titled “Foreign Intelligence, the Law, and Changing Technology.” This course is designed to provide a better understanding of intelligence collection and the unique ethical dilemmas this development poses. This one-credit course will be graded on a Pass/No Pass basis. Indicate your interest by Aug. 29 via Course Interest Form.
Ukrainian Courses at MSU
MSU will offer Elementary Ukrainian I in Fall 2025 and Elementary Ukrainian II in Spring 2026, as well as a Survey of Ukrainian Culture in English in Spring 2026. The Fall 2025 Ukrainian 101 course (LL 151_749) will be offered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3:00 to 3:50 p.m. Students with questions are encouraged to contact Prof. Jason Merrill (merril25@msu.edu) or Prof. Matthew Pauly (paulym@msu.edu).
