Black August
I wrote about my plans to observe this more radical version of Black History Month on my site, and I’d love if you checked it out and let me know if there are things that you’d want to engage for the month. One thing I have to work on focusing more on is the impact that the prison system has on Black women. Angela Davis is the shining example of a person who’s been inside and worked to prevent more folks from being in. I haven’t added her books to this reading list, but it’s in my list of things to read for this year.
Last year, I practiced it in the midst of organizing, which gave me more solace than I expected. Organizing requires a lot of reflection, and having to focus on the lives of people who are forcibly separated from us helped me ground myself more than I anticipated. On the 45th anniversary of such an event, I’m eager to know what things you’d want to grow in the tenants of studying, fasting, fighting and training. I’ll keep this short, with some follow-ups on things I’ve written recently like my frustration with finding a job in this market, not wanting to engage in electoral politic discussions online or a semi-biographical reflection of what being a developer means to me.
I’m hoping this reaches you in a place of peace.
