What I learnt hunting for Shopify stores
What's good?
So I'm knee deep in SEO right now.
That shouldn't be a surprise for an SEO consultant, right?
Of course.
But this is a little different.
I'm looking only at Shopify stores (pro tip: type "powered by shopify" into Google to see only Shopify stores in results).
Why?
I'm looking to learn more and see who's doing clever/cool SEO things.
Also, I'm looking for the exact opposite. So I can hit them up and show them how to start printing money.
So after weeks and weeks of trawling, here's what has stood out to me:
Most Shopify sites have no SEO.
The ones that do, are basic. And few.
And the very few that do it right, are in a league of their own.
For the basic ones, they optimise the homepage and a few random pages and that's about it.
But the ones that have proper SEO, this is what they do:
Optimise title tags across the entire site (homepage, collections, products - everything)
Description on collection pages (seriously undderrated)
Clever and useful internal linking across the entire site (from collection pages AND within product descriptions).
And for the really smart ones: they go over and above the usual categorisation.
One thing I'm doing for my baby gifts website is to setup collections based on search queries. For example, I'm setting up a collection page showing products suitable for a newborn baby girl, to capture traffic for any queries around "newborn gifts for baby girls". I've already done something like this based on "age" - Baby Shower (to be born), Newborn & Infant (0-3 months, maybe a bit older) and Toddler (1 year+) and I've also set something up specifically for baby's 1st birthday (so basically, gifts for a 1 year old).
I know this is a lot to take in but it works and is worth your time if you want to make more money from your Shopify store.
Remember, you don't just want your homepage to rank. And individual products may need to fight a bit harder to rank. But your collection pages are the moneymakers that absolutely positively have to rank well.
I just gave you the blueprint. Time to go make that money machine, son.
You know it makes sense.
Peace,
Jaaved
