This week's SEO RIOT! 🔥
What's good?
Once again, the SEO world is on fire.
Because of something Google said.
Nothing new, really. Us SEO folks are fickle and a bunch of turncoats - at the best of times!
I KID. only some of us are.
But what's really happened?
Google has said that 4 things are now longer their own ranking systems.
Namely: page experience, page speed, mobile friendliness and security.
What people interpret this as: these things don't matter anymore
What has happened: people are beating the life out of Technical SEO folks saying their roles are now defunct because, frankly, these 4 things have dominated much of Technical SEO for so long.
What you actually need to know: Google hasn't said these don't matter. These things still very much matter and Technical SEO is still very much a thing.
These 4 things are no longer 'separate' systems.
Keep in mind, Google is super complex. So much so, that no single person knows everything about the algorithm as a whole.
Like, no one. There's lots of different teams working on different things related to search. It's all compartmentalised but it all works together in its own special way. Google has just changed how these 4 things come together as part of the overall search algo.
NO BIGGIE. Google could definitely word things better though.
What you should do now:
you should still keep testing your site on different devices, screen sizes, internet connections to see how it works. My recommendation is to use it exclusively on mobile, (in fact, build/design mobile first then move to desktop)
you should always be checking for security - not just the SSL but overall security of everything on your site (scripts, form submissions)
don't just improve page speed, actively avoid creating bloat and slowing your site down. your content creation process needs to factor this in at all times.
and just make your content easily accessible (redable, findable)
I like sites like BoredPanda but my word, the usability sucks. Ads in random places, video and other content obstructing the main content. Jankiness. Stuff moving around and disrupting the layout as the page loads.
THIS SUCKS.
The best way to get ahead of everybody else is to keep making your content:
easier to find (SEO)
easier to read (USABILITY)
easier to share (....)
That's it.
No one gets it right 100% of the time.
But we can always aim for 100%.
Otherwise, why bother?
You know it makes sense.
Peace,
Jaaved
