Should you copy your competitors?
Yes and No. It depends.
It can make sense to do so, especially if you’re new to the game and are up against some longer established players who have dominated for a long time.
They clearly did the hard work and research to get to the top - makes sense to copy them, right?
In a way, yes. There’s plenty you can learn from their site structures, page content and how they optimise their websites to rank well.
And you can even reverse engineer their backlink profile and go after the same links.
But all of this has a limit.
You won’t be able to get the exact same links. No way. You may be lucky to get a third of the same links.
But even then, not all of those links would make sense for your business.
Similarly, you may offer the same products and services but there will still be a difference - quality, customer service, general experience… this is hard to replicate because of the human factor in all of this.
So I question the rationale of focusing so heavily on the competition.
This is why I advise my clients to merely be aware of the competition and what they’re up to. But don’t obsess over them.
Because if you’re spending all your time worrying about other businesses, who will worry about yours?
Don’t fall into the trap of keeping up with the joneses.
No one else is gonna stack your bars but you!
I is making sense and you knows it.
Peace,
Jaaved
