Is your business like an 8am lecture?
Let me tell you about a person by the name of Ross Simmonds.
If you're in the SEO / Content space, you'll no doubt know who he is.
Ross is an excellent SEO and a trailblazing content expert. But what Ross truly excels at is "content distribution".
Ross is UNSTOPPABLE at distributing content. The man has no equal. No one distributes like he does.
The man not only puts out the best content, he makes sure the universe knows about it.
He's always reminding us to get our content out there. Publish once, distribute forever - that's what he says.
Publish a blog post and turn it into a twitter thread. Post up screenshots on Instagram. Use it answer questions on Quora. Make Tiktoks. The list of options are ENDLESS.
We often think our issues stem from not publishing enough (or at all).
But if you listen to Ross, you'll realise that the issue is that we're not making enough noise about our content.
I wrote about this issue a while back (What do most small business websites and 8am lectures have in common?).
If I had to figure out why this is the case, I'd say it's not just being time poor. It's because we're shy.
We don't think anyone cares. And we're worried about what people might think or say.
WRONG.
Let me use myself as an example using my online store.
We launched a new range of gifts for Ramadan and Eid.
We took photos, optimised the website and posted on social.
It didn't take long to rank well in Google but that was it. Sales were average.
Then I realised: I wasn't promoting it enough WITHIN MY OWN CIRCLE.
I have a decent twitter following to use but I wasn't using it.
I have a lot of connections on LinkedIn and Facebook - why am I not talking to them about this?
Why am I not using the WhatsApp status feature like everyone else is? (I see lots of posts about social causes and other businesses, why not me?)
Why am I not creating hype about my own products and my own business?!
Why am I keeping this a secret?!
I will never know.
Thankfully I rectified the situation.
I began posting on WhatsApp every other day (and started getting comments!). I posted on Twitter and even got a sale from the amazingly talented Areej Abu Ali (follow her, she's a phenomenal SEO professional). And I started dropping it in casual conversations.
The end result is that it's brought in some sales in addition to the SEO and paid ads I run.
Sometimes you don't need to know any kind of digital marketing to get results for your business.
You may not know SEO or how to run ads in Google.
But one thing we all know is our business and how to talk.
We should do more of that.
We'll be glad we did.
Peace,
Jaaved
