How to bore your readers to death
Do you like reading walls and walls of text?
I bet you don’t. (really).
So when you look at content on your site, ask yourself:
is it easy to understand what’s going on just by skimming?
Because if it isn’t, it’s time to do this:
break it up into multiple paragraphs (no more great big wall of words)
add subheadings (helps for skimmers, helps with context)
add relevant internal links (use the actual words, not ‘read more’ or ‘click here’
add images (it can help with context and understanding)
add alt text to those images (helps search engines and screen readers understand what the image is about)
and my personal favourite: give people a call to action, of sorts.
Want them to contact you? Book in a free call? Sign up to the newsletter? Whatever it is: just tell people what to do!
Do this and tell me things don’t get better for you. I dare you.
But don’t just take my word for it.
This article from Science dot org says it all: Reading dies in complexity: Online news consumers prefer simple writing
Who woulda thought?!
You know it makes sense!
