3 SEO things you're probably screwing up

What's good?

Ok so - I've done a few big SEO audits lately.

What surprises me is how bad their SEO is.

What doesn't surprise me is that they're all different businesses in different countries.

Seems bad SEO does not discriminate.

Florist in Dubai, UAE.

Pharmacy in Auckland, New Zealand.

Car Detailing in Brisbane, Australia.

All getting the basics completely messed up.

But you can learn from this so you don't end up wasting money.

Here's 3 things they did wrong and it's also probably what you're doing wrong too

  1. Terrible internal linking
I've said it many times before. Internal linking is an SEO superpower. Be as descriptive as you need to be with your internal links - just don't get carried away (don't link an entire sentence, for example). And look, if you use something generic like 'click here', I won't judge you. For now. But I will judge you.

  2. Changing URLs and forgetting redirects
Look, I get it. STUFF happens. URLs change. It's normal. What isn't normal is leaving your peeps behind. If you moved, would you not provide a forwarding address? If you have to change a URL, and Google already knows about it, then you need to make sure you setup a redirect. 301 to be precise. Don't let people hit a dead end with a broken link!

  3. Terrible mobile experience
It's almost as if people don't even test or use their site on mobile. These mobile sites load slower than a sloth on acid. And they're clunky to use. Desktop version is a lot better but that's not the point: most sites are getting close to 50% mobile users (if not more). So why would you alienate, isolate and frustrate your mobile users?

You can argue #3 isn't a strict SEO ting but hear me out: a fast loading, responsive website that works beautifully on any device and any internet connection is always going to win, hand over fist.

And if that's not what we're all about in SEO, what exactly are we about?

I'll leave you to ponder that.

Peace,

Jaaved
