Mistakes are indicators

Learn how mistakes can become tools

Mistakes are indicators of systemic flaws. If something was missed, it means it was not part of a system. If it was in a system, then it just means it was not set properly. Maybe you need to adjust something to make sure it does not happen again.

That said, mistakes can be a touchy topic, so here are a few ways to minimize hurt and maximize impact:

  • Don’t make it personal. Target the action, not the person.

  • Take ownership of the mistake, even if it’s not yours to take. This gives you a lot of power over the situation.

  • Assume it’s an issue with your system, not with the person. This helps you find a solution to this mistake in the future and avoid digging dungeons full of reasons.

Here’s an awesome quote by Dan Martell:

If you got a problem, its usually because there is no system. If the probelm happens again, after setting up systems; then you have a people problem.

— Dan Martell (paraphrased)
