Hey all! I looked up today and realized oh crap, I had better send a newsletter because believe it or not, Vampires of El Norte releases next week. I have no idea how time has flown so quickly.
…actually, I do know why the time has flown by. The day I sent out my last newsletter, April 17, was literally the day before my daughter was born.
!!!
You could say I’ve been a bit busy since then. Juggling a book release with an infant is no joke, but my publisher has made it as smooth a ride as can be. I am endlessly grateful for the incredible team at Berkley. They rock.
And I am so grateful to dump a wheelbarrow's worth of a ton of incredible news into your inbox today! We have so much to catch up on, you and I. For example:
- Vampires of El Norte is a Book of the Month Club pick for August!
- It is also a Library Reads Top 10 pick for August and has received fantastic press thus far, including a profile in The New York Times and a starred review from Booklist, who said it was "full of expressive, sumptuous prose and enlightening historical details." *bows theatrically* Not bad for a book I edited while horrifically ill with morning sickness.
- The Hacienda will finally be published in paperback on September 26! I’m sitting on one incredible secret related to its paperback publication, but unfortunately I have to keep my lips zipped for now. In the meantime, there is a Goodreads giveaway for gorgeous paperback copies, open until August 22!
- Tally ho! The Hacienda and Vampires of El Norte will be traveling across the pond to the UK! The Hacienda will receive the UK paperback treatment with a slick new cover this October, and Vampires of El Norte will appear Fall 2024.
- My flash fiction piece “There Are No Monsters on Rancho Buenavista” was selected by editor R.F. Kuang (of Babel and Yellowface fame) as one of ten fantasy stories to appear in The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2023. It is an incredible honor to be included in any best-of anthology, but I am especially humbled that my little story will appear in such a prestigious volume. It will be published this October and is available for preorder now.
- And finally, a special treat for those based in the Pacific Northwest: on September 13 at 7pm, I will be having my first in-person event in my new hometown! Join me and Sadie Hartmann at the central branch of the Seattle Public Library at an event co-sponsored by Clarion West and the Mexican Consulate in Seattle.
I absolutely cannot wait for this event!
Before I leave you, I have one last request: if you plan on buying
Vampires of El Norte when it is published, I would love it if you considered preordering it. The fate of some books are made or broken by preorder numbers (which roll into the all-important first week of sales). The sausage gets made in a big, bad corporate world, and if you want to keep seeing books (sausages, if you will?) from yours truly, your dollars talk. Preordering is the absolute best way to let publishers know what kind of books you want in the world!
And now, it's time to get some writing in while the baby sleeps. I have so many more stories I want to share with you all. Thank you all so much for supporting the stories I have already put out into the world. It means so much to me.
xx
