Young Hearts @ IFC, 7:30 3/25
This week I’m seeing Young Hearts at the IFC! I’m going to the 7:30 screening on Tuesday 3/25, which should get out around 9:15. There is no assigned seating at the IFC, so just let me know if you’re planning on joining and I’ll meet you there! This film is in Dutch and French with English subtitles (realizing many of the films I see have subtitles so thought I’d start adding that info!)
Young Hearts follows 14-year-old Elias as he realizes he’s falling in love for the first time with his new classmate Alexander. An official selection for the Berlin Film Festival, Young Hearts is a warm and lovely coming of age story.
I really think this’ll hit the spot for me right now. Ever since I saw that animated short at the IFC on the discovery of young love, I’ve been wanting something in an extended format matching that tenderness :)
Last week I saw Mickey 17, which is Bong Joon-ho’s newest film. I was .. disappointed. I did enjoy it (I enjoy almost everything I see) but I had much higher hopes for it given his past work. It felt like it was intended to be a political allegory, complete with lead character mimicking Trump mannerisms, but there was not enough similarity to any particular thing to give the allegory any meat. There were no moments in the film that stood out as particularly inspired, nothing that exposed any particularly human feeling. I thought it was a fine action movie, but nothing more. I had wanted more.
