Sorry, Baby @ Angelika New York, 7:30 7/22

This week I’m seeing Sorry, Baby at the Angelika New York! I’ll be going to the 7:30 showing on Tuesday. The movie should finish by 9:30. As I’ve mentioned before, Angelika membership is free and gives you 50% off Tuesday screenings, so you can join for just 10$!

This movie comes as a request from a friend. If there’s something specific you’d like to see and you’re looking for accompaniment, feel free to reach out! For my part this is a great excuse to go into a film knowing essentially nothing about it. The major downside is, that means I can’t really say anything in this newsletter about it! But as they say: the needs of the few outweigh those of the many. So no info for you!

Last week I saw Sex at the Film Forum. I enjoyed it a lot. I feel like the Scandinavian film I’ve seen so far often asks you to accept a little more contrivance than similar American indie films, but once you have they have a lot to say. Although admittedly my sample size isn’t large; guess I’ll just have to watch more!

It asked two main questions, both of which I thought were very interesting. The first was a question on how gender intersects with feeling an observer’s gaze, how one may assume that gaze feels for another, and how that gaze may feel in a post-gender framing. The second was a question around how different people feel intimacy while in a relationship, and specifically, why is it that purely physical sex is considered a taboo while in a committed relationship.

I’m not going to spend a lot of time here going into details of the film’s exploration of those topics, but if you want a from my perspective surprisingly nuanced exploration that may require a little bit of acceptance of contrivance, then this film may be a good option for you!

I’m very interested in seeing the remaining films in the LOVE-SEX-DREAMS triptych.
