Sentimental Value. Peter Hujar's Day (Take Two!)
We’re seeing Sentimental Value at the Angelika New York at 7:05 on Monday! This theater has assigned seating so if you’d like to join let me know and we can coordinate! This movie comes as a recommendation from a friend so as usual I know absolutely nothing about it. But I’ve had it recommended independently from multiple channels so I’m very excited!
I tried to see Peter Hujar’s Day about a month ago but I got sick and missed it! I’m trying again this week. I’m going to the 8:45 screening on Wednesday at the Film Forum. I have a +1 membership so the first person to say they’d like to join will be able to get a ticket for only $12.50 :) It’s also worth noting that this is a shorter film, only 76 minutes, so while the start time is late it should finish at a somewhat reasonable time.
If you are not aware, I am a huge fan of films that simply contain two people talking. This seems to be one such film, with rave reviews. I’m copying and pasting the review I copy and pasted for the last newsletter that mentioned this film:
“A charming experiment that should delight those who like their pleasures both nostalgic and voyeuristic... Astoundingly detailed and wonderfully evocative... by turns languid, funny, tender and endearing... Beautifully performed and lovingly assembled... In its attention to the quotidian routines familiar to us all, the movie finds meaning in the mundane, showing how the most ordinary events—like, in Hujar's case, a phone call from Susan Sontag—can one day add up to an extraordinary life.”
– Jeannette Catsoulis, The New York Times
Who doesn’t want a life-affirming portrayal of the kind of conversation between two people we all have so often?
Last week I saw The Gleaners and I as part of this newsletter. I was deeply exhausted and, for what I think was the first time in the history of this letter, I fell asleep! The film was supposed to have a special reception after it, but I went home instead! I felt terrible as the organizer had greeted me so enthusiastically and I had expressed such excitement for the reception to him prior to the screening, but afterwards I just told him I was too tired and left. From what I remember seeing it was a great film and I hope that I didn’t shake his confidence as an organizer!
