No Other Land @ Film Forum, 8:45 4/1
This week I’m seeing No Other Land at the Film Forum. I’ll be going to the Tuesday 8:45 screening.
No Other Land is a masterwork documentary on Israeli incremental expulsion of the West Bank community of Masafer Yatta filmed over 5 years. The film won the Oscar for best documentary, along with many other awards.
On March 24, following the Oscars, the Palestinian co-director of No Other Land was beaten by Israeli settlers and detained by the Israeli military when settlers attacked their village. See the AP article on the event for more information.
I, for one, am interested in seeing any film that would cause such a response.
I visited the West Bank in 2017, two years before this film began shooting. I’m very interested in learning more about what has happened since I was there.
On another note -
Young Hearts last week felt like a canonical coming of age story. Despite being Dutch, it had lots of the same structure as an American coming of age story might have. That, to me, was the most interesting part. I didn’t get much out of it unfortunately.
