Margin Call @ Metrograph

This week I’m seeing Margin Call at the Metrograph! I’m going on Tuesday to the 9:30pm showing. The movie should finish by 11:30pm. Metrograph has assigned seats so let me know if you’re interested in joining and I can grab you an adjoining ticket!

I’ve seen a lot of very intimate and raw films recently, and just once I’d like to see a very American thriller: the story of a slowly spreading panic at a Wall Street investment firm during the 2007-2008 financial crisis, and the female head of the bank’s risk management division forced to hold her own amidst her macho know-it-all male colleagues. According to The New Yorker, Margin Call is “easily the best Wall Street movie ever made.”

I may also be seeking some catharsis in the form of other peoples’ corporate struggles…

Last week I was having some mental health issues related to my own corporate struggles and opted not to see a movie. As a result I still owe a brief review of the previous week’s viewing of Girls Will Be Girls!

…and as usual when it’s been more than a week I don’t actually remember the film very well. Perhaps I should start writing my notes more quickly after seeing it!

I do recall a feeling that was somewhat striking to me at the time. The film involved a coming of age in a strict high school, and all the complexity involved not just due to the strictness but also that is due to simply being human. As is inevitable I began thinking about my own high school / coming of age experiences, and I was struck by how distant they felt to me now. Many of them were 40% of my life ago!

It was nice that they felt so distant.
