Girls Will Be Girls @ Film Forum
This week I’m seeing Girls Will Be Girls at the Film Forum! I’m going to the 8pm showing on Tuesday. The film is about two hours long so it should get out around 10pm. Film Forum doesn’t have assigned seating and my membership doesn’t support +1s so feel free to grab your own ticket and shoot me a text / email that you’ll be joining!
Girls Will Be Girls “could be a simple coming-of-age story, but it’s been written and directed and acted with such feeling, such observation, that every moment pulses with life” (Bilge Ebiri, Vulture). It follows strait-laced 16-year-old model student Mira’s awakening at a strict Indian boarding school in the Himalayas. We engage with the contradictory layers of her awakening, the complicated feelings triggered in her unfulfilled mother, and the school’s lax penalties for boys’ transgressive behavior.
I’m in the mood for a raw, human film, and this sounds like it’ll scratch that itch! I also miss the Film Forum; I haven’t been there since August! I’m going to get me an egg cream :)
Last week’s Paris, Texas was incredible. I loved loved loved the movie. But honestly, it’s been such a long week otherwise that I am having trouble remembering why. I think I just felt that it was raw but in a vaguely contrived way that helped it nevertheless feel more direct, as how old Roman statues sometimes show muscle tensions that would be impossible for a mere mortal only to render the form more beautiful. Great expressions of genuine but somewhat implausible characters expressing themselves as if they were real people who had somehow found themselves in these situations.
(I guess what I’m saying is, I feel raw and emotional and I’m enjoying seeing that on the screen, as well.)
