April @ Film Forum, 7:30 5/6

This week I’m seeing April at the Film Forum! I’m going Tuesday to the 7:30 screening, which should finish by 9:50. My membership includes two discount tickets so the first person to say they’d like to join will get that sweet sweet 7 dollars off ;) enough to cover an egg cream!

April follows an OB/GYM in rural Georgia (the country, not the state) who is facing an aggressive husband suing over malpractice, and who provides illegal abortion services to village women. Dea Kulumbegashvili’s work “plumbs the outer limits of feminist empathy and the stark realities of patriarchal control of women’s bodies in a modern-day medical system.” The film won the Special Jury Prize at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.

Pumped!

I didn’t send out the newsletter last week because I was in Chicago and I am tired enough as a result of my trip that I don’t want to sit and write up something detailed about Killer of Sheep, especially since it was two weeks ago. So I won’t! I remember getting a lot out of the film; it reminded us of the triptych we saw a while back about existing in modern-day Cuba, but with (even) less of a narrative. Incredibly expressive slice-of-life which warrants reflection, not intellectually per se but certainly emotionally.
