Anora @ Angelika New York, 8:10 3/11
This week I am finally watching Anora, the film that recently swept the Oscars. I found a 35mm screening at the Angelika on half price Tuesday and I just couldn’t turn it down! I’m going to the 8:10pm screening, which should get out by 10:30pm. The Angelika New York has assigned seating, so if you’re interested in joining let me know and we can organize seating! And again, on Tuesdays tickets are half off for members and membership is free ;)
I really don’t know anything about Anora besides the hype surrounding it and that a sex worker gets with someone wealthy. I’m really looking forward to the experience!
I didn’t organize anything last week because I was too busy with work. We have some major deadlines coming up, so I’m still super busy, but this week I’m committing to taking the time anyway.
Two weeks ago I saw the Oscar-nominated animated shorts at the IFC. I again had such a strong impression that film is an incredible gift. I cried in many of the films, and cried tears of thankfulness that I was in a position where I could go and watch films so wonderful they make me cry.
It was a REALLY good time.
The short film that stuck with me the most was “In The Shadow of the Cypress.” It was a wordless animated short from Iran and dealt with the impact of PTSD decades later on someone’s life and the lives of those around them. I was particularly struck by this motif of banging one’s head against the wall to make the episode stop. Really visceral and effective.
The next film was my other favorite and was totally the opposite. It dealt with young ones discovering the joy of attraction for the first time. The use of a wonderful soundtrack and this vibrant pink color to illustrate how it overwhelmed them was simply beautiful.
I LOVE FILM
