Animated Oscar-Nominated Shorts @ IFC, 7:30 2/26
This week I’m going to (another) one of IFC’s screenings of Oscar-nominated shorts! I’ll be going Wednesday to the 7:30pm showing, which should finish around 9.
Last year AND last week I saw the IFC’s Oscar-nominated shorts screenings and I LOVED them! Last week I saw the live action shorts, and this week I’ll be seeing the animated ones. I’m very excited!
We shed many tears watching the live action shorts. The last two shorts hit us particularly hard. They both showed real-time heartbreaking glimpses into situations I might not otherwise be exposed to.
“A Lien” was about ICE’s practice of ambushing undocumented immigrants at their required green card hearings and deporting them. Such a betrayal, taking people who grew up in America away from their families as they try to become documented.
“The Last Ranger” followed the true story of poachers stealing the horn of an endangered rhino while in a firefight with the rangers protecting that rhino, and leaving the animal to die. It really helped me understand what rangers go through.
Seeing those shorts was a wonderful reminder of the power of film to encourage empathy and inspire action. Such a gift! I’m excited for round two.
