A Brighter Summer Day @ Metrograph, 6:00 8/5

This week I’m seeing A Brighter Summer Day at Metrograph! I’m going to the 6:00pm showing on Tuesday August 5. The movie is nearly four hours long and will get out around 10pm. My membership has a +1 discounted ticket so the first person to dive in with me will get that discount :)

I was too sick to leave my apartment from Sunday to Sunday, went outside for the first time in over a week earlier today. I am interested therefore in a double helping of film for this week ;)

On a related note, I will be out of town next week, so no newsletter!

A Brighter Summer Day is a sprawling and intimate depiction of Taiwan in the early 1960s, inspired by the story of the country’s first juvenile homicide. I know essentially nothing about any of this and I am very interested in expanding my worldview so I think this will be quite the adventure!

The last movie we saw was Sorry, Baby. I LOVED that film. It had an incredibly touching depiction of pain and how the way we hold it changes over time, including the sudden swell that can develop despite our best efforts to move on. It was also a rare glimpse into the very intimate moments of a life very different from mine, like a peak through a crack in the door. I am very thankful I got to see it.
