22 October 2026 ::: today is the AusArt Day 2026 fundraiser, a day of fundraising organised by Creative Australia, where arts organisations and artists ask you to support their projects. With over 300 projects requesting funding this year, there’s something for everyone. Invisible art space has joined this year and we’re so thankful to all of our donators for their support! Thank you so much. Your donations will go towards operational costs of preparing for our exhibitions and events. There’s still a day or so to donate. Thanks to Creative Australia for organising AusArt Day and for the Australian Cultural Fund for accepting our proposal to setup a donation page.

02-29 November 2026 ::: Emily Simek (Mel) and Shelley Watters (Syd) collaborative studio residency → with, together: greens and browns is an expansive, collaborative project between Emily Simek (Naarm/Melbourne) and Shelley Watters (Gadigal and Wangal/Sydney) that explores gardening as a context for art-making mediated by technology.

I love Emily and Shelley’s approach. It brings to mind Filipa Ramos’ ideas on ecological models of exhibition making from her book, “The Artist as Ecologist” (2025) — as in, not only showing work but behaving ecologically too. Emily and Shelley are hosting an experimental video making workshop on 14 November, where Emily will share her way of making a video ‘daisy chain’ — a process for collective video making that recalls her childhood memories of stringing wildflowers together to form chains, shared as necklaces. The workshop is free, but has limited places, so please book your spot here.

As an aside, there’s also an Art and Ecology class with Ela Spalding at Node Curatorial running now, which is a great lead up to Emily and Shelley’s residency, workshop and exhibition.

Artists’ statement

The foundation of the project is informed by each artists’ established processes in composting as part of their experimental art practices. The title “with, together” is drawn from the etymology of the prefix “com-”; which appears frequently in daily use; compost, commune, communicating, computing, combining, companionship, and compassion.

Approaching collaboration as an invitation for action, the artists “dig into each other’s compost piles” so to speak, where the term “pile” refers both to the literal compost piles in their gardens, and the sharing of archival work, materials, skills and technologies within their respective art practices.

Living apart and unable to meet together in their physical gardens, the artists ask the question of how to compost together at a distance. This unfolded over months of weekly online calls and messages, through a co-mingling of art practice, friendship and skills exchange, alongside embedding of technologies such as endoscopic cameras and flat-bed scanners within the garden ecology.

with, together: greens and browns culminates in a joint studio residency and work-in-progress showing at Invisible Art Space, where “greens and browns” is the ephemera that has emerged from a nutrient rich layering of distinctive practices.

In February, we have two exciting exhibitions from international artists during their Sydney visits:

February 2027 ::: Chie Tokuyama (Japan) + Carla Francis (writer) -> a collaborative exhibition of paintings and written works considering the Japanese concept of ichigo ichie and how chance meetings and unexpected encounters, particularly across cultures, can fundamentally change the trajectory of a person’s life

February 2027 ::: Chie Tokuyama (Japan) -> solo painting exhibition

:::

April 2027 ::: geekgirl // Rosie Cross → a retrospective show of the original geekgirl with net art and online magazines from the early 1990s

:::

August 2027 ::: Mez Breeze → new works from one of Australia’s early net artists, digital / electronic literature multi-award winner and originator of mezangelle, “a hybrid language that blends elements of programming code with poetic expression” (Rhizome). Mez has since been working in game development, VR and with AI and for this show, Mez will be exhibiting some of her new works, so we’re very excited
