INVENTED ORGANS
An introduction
Hi there, and welcome to my Substack, INVENTED ORGANS, a repository for my thoughts about the intersection between philosophy, politics, and art.
I started this blog more or less as a creative outlet and to express what’s on my mind with regards to current events and the things I’m watching, reading or listening to. The idea is that I get to play fast and loose with the usual stylistic constraints of academic and journalistic writing that I have heretofore been stuck with.
With that in mind, I’ll do my best to maintain a balance between casual observation and the thoughtful analysis you’d expect from either of those genres. My qualifications aren’t many: I graduated with an undergraduate degree in media writing and a minor in philosophy in 2020, have been published a couple times, but still find myself constrained by the lack of an outlet for some of the things I want to write. So, what can you expect?
Political commentary
Bad news. I’m a human being with these things called opinions, and they will both inform and sometimes drive my writing.
Movie reviews, analysis and critique
I watch a lot of movies. Like, a lot. And I have thoughts about them. What makes them good, bad, what they mean, and what that meaning means in relation to other philosophical, political, and artistic works.
Book reviews, analysis and critique
Books! Who doesn’t love ‘em? I like to think I read a lot of them, but you always wish you could read more. You can expect my thoughts and observations about whatever I’m reading, be it about philosophy, history or fiction. So long as I find it thought-provoking, I’ll share them here.
Horror
It wasn’t until recently that I stopped lying to myself that I have always had a fixation on the macabre. Yes, it’s true– I am an aficionado of all kinds of horror media, and am just as fixated on the subject so far as it extends beyond fiction. In addition to reviews, analysis or thoughts about horror books and movies, there is a nonzero chance I will find a way to bring in my pet fascination with the intersection between the strange and the mundane. At the very least, you’ll likely notice a theme of spooky subjects running throughout. As a matter of fact, this is part of the reasoning behind the name INVENTED ORGANS. It doubles as a reference to Deleuze & Guattari’s philosophy and David Cronenberg’s most recent film, Crimes of the Future.
