The Intertidal Update - November 2024

It’s November in the USA, where Intertidal is based. You may have heard that, as one colleague succinctly put it, “there have been some changes.” The extent and impact of those changes is very much unknown, but it is always a good time to create good data documentation and back up your data. We’ve got a bountiful harvest of items for you this month, so tuck in.

Hot on the heels of the Nature Data Sharing Initiative, our partners at the Regional Wildlife Science Collaborative for Offshore Wind (RWSC) have published their data policy and sharing guidelines on Github. Are you funding collaborative research, or working with multiple data owners to collect and combine data? The policy is CC-BY licensed, so remix and repurpose as you need. We’re also working with RWSC on their Data Sharing & Management Plan template, which will support this policy and live at DMPTool.org. Stay tuned for that release in early 2025, and contact us if you want to talk about plans and policies of your own.

Congratulations to the Ocean Risk & Resilience Action Alliance, UC Santa Cruz, Ode, and all the other partners who came together to launch the global Coastal Risk Index, an interactive mapping tool that also exposes the underlying data. If you want an example of a robust, data-driven, scenario planning tool for our climate future, go here.

The Global Indigenous Data Sovereignty conference dates are out: March 31 - April 3, 2025 in Kamberri, Ngunnawal Country (Canberra, AUS). Indigenous People can sign up here to get more information and attend.

WILDLABS is conducting a new survey to update their State of Conservation Technology Report. The only report of its kind, this is the place to check out what tech people in the field are using and what they need. It’s all biomes and communities - not just ocean - and essential reading for entrepreneurs, investors, funders, and anyone else trying to improve how we measure and monitor the state of the planet.

Finally, if you’re using AWS to host publicly available datasets, you can apply for sponsorship to get a discount. Save some on hosting, give your data managers a bonus?

Special thanks for conversations and inspiration this month:

Liz Neeley, Andrew Grant, Doug Poirer, Xiao Recio-Blanco and everyone who came to our Oct 31 ocean data stewardship strategy session
