Lots happening, huh. Last week's newsletter was Happy New Year 2026, and the Hub call was titled "Kickoff".

Something is forming. Transforming. Solidifying. Moving through us. Moving through you and me, the people in this scene, we who are the atoms in this nebulous gas becoming bubbly liquid becoming tangible solid.

A mass of people moving through change is often called a "movement". What kind of movement is this?

My answers are: It's a movement of the universe experiencing itself. (billions) It's a movement of humanity becoming conscious. (million) It's a movement of societal cultural evolution. (thousands) It's a movement through and beyond a meaning crisis. (hundreds) It's a metamodern integral developmental movement. (tens) It's a globally-connected post-covid web of sense-makers and practitioners. (ones) It's us who are here now. And it's a movement inside our hearts and minds.

And the preceding paragraph is just a bunch of written words on a screen. Emptiness, down to the vast space inside the atoms inside the pixels inside the screen you're looking at. The real thing that is moving cannot be pinned down with words. The true territory is beyond all our senses.

What kind of movement is this? The one that's moving us. It's beyond us (as our mental identification), and made of us, and our choices are both vital and inevitable. It's a dance that dances us.

Movements "fail" all the time. The definition of "failure" is context dependent, so a political movement can fail to achieve its aims, and a social movement can fail to sway its society... but what about a movement of cultural evolution? Well... it strikes me that there's only one of those on this planet, and that we don't know yet if it will fail. Can we become wise and skilled enough to hold our power with love?

The unfolding of cultural evolution will fail if the long arc of the moral universe does not bend toward justice. It will fail if the future is a boot stamping on a human face forever. It will fail if beauty disappears as the eyes of its beholders snuff out. It will fail if the infinite game ends.

Take that huge global scale, and shrink it down to the spaces that we hold, you and me and our thousand closest Liminal Web mates. If we are unwise or unskilled, or even if we are not, our efforts may fail to achieve their aims. But I know that our failures may still contribute to the greater good beyond our web and our lifetimes. And the only alternative to trying(being) is dying. The suffering of this world is calling us to be our biggest selves. The vast potential of this world is calling us to be our biggest selves. The universe is calling itself in us.
