insertdisc5's August 2026 newsletter of news

“GAME NEWS PLEASE!”

At this point I’m assuming you read my other newsletters im not gonna repeat myself here. HERES HOW MY LIFE IS GOING INSTEAD

“OK YAY!!! HOW’S YOUR LIFE GOING!!!”

Like I mentioned in the last newsletter, I’ve been working on lowering my social media usage. Very happy to say that I managed to spend less than 1h30 a day on socmed this whole week!!!! I’m very happy!!!! Especially since it gives me more time for two things: scrapbooking and reading!!!

“TELL US MORE ABOUT SCRAPBOOKING!!!”

Ok so while I was in Japan one of my goals was to get a Traveler’s Notebook. And I did get one and it’s so fun!!! I love the leather cover which gets the ✨patina✨ the more you use it, and the sheer amount of choice in the inserts you can put in is just so fun.

I got a passport size to carry around in my bag, which has a craft file insert and a blank notebook insert. I use it for light sketching, taking random notes, and sticking random stickers. I also have a little envelope for any flowers or plants I’d like to press, and for a couple business cards I can give out! In general it’s very nice to have something I can grab and fiddle with instead of grabbing my phone. I saw a video once where their advice was to replace your phone with something the same size, so you can still keep the habit of going into your pocket, but TADA! it’s a notebook. so now you have a whole new habit!

I liked it so much that I ended up going to a store here in Toronto to buy a bigger size!!!

In this one I have both a blank notebook insert (for doodlin) and a lined notebook insert (for taking notes). I’ve also been trying out some acrylic markers in it and Oh My God what a game changer those are. And yes I can now use all the washi tape I want (I’ve had some of those for 7 years and never knew where to use them…)

For the lined notebook, I use it both for taking meeting notes, and for recording any fun videos or books I’ve read (above are my notes for this video which I highly recommend!)

Anyway about time I got a good notebook to do some scrapbooking in (looks at my scrapbooking game)

“TELL US MORE ABOUT WHAT YOU’VE BEEN READING AND WATCHING!!!”

Good because I read/watched a buncha things.

I saw The Invite, and it was so good. A couple invites another couple for dinner. Drama ensues. Uncut Gems For Women. You gotta go see it. My movie of the year. Penelope Cruz is there

Also saw both Backrooms and Obsession. Backrooms’ set design was absolutely bonkers and the way they made moments unsettling was so interesting… And Obsession was just great. It wouldve been a 7/10 but Inde Navarrette was So Good in this movie that it makes it a 10/10. Highly recommend both of those if you like spooky movies

Having more time to read means I bought all of the Succession scripts. My god this show is sooooo goood and the scripts are soooo good!!!!

I also read Plastic, Prism, Void by Violet Allen, which advertises itself as a mix between Sailor Moon and House of Leaves and like!!! They ain’t wrong!!! Loved the whole presentation of this book. The colors. The fonts. It was neat. I am waiting for the next volume.

In trying to keep myself informed about The AI Stuff, I read The Reverse Centaur's Guide to Life After AI. As always, very fun to be against AI and then you read a book about AI and you’re like. Yeah actually this is all way worse than I thought.

I will also give kudos to this book for teaching me ways to use AI that AREN’T all about stealing work from others or making climate change worse, like how the Human Rights Data Analysis Group is using AI to speed up data collection, and thanks to it they’re able to build up massive database of human rights statistics. Like for example, gathering data to figure out the exact degree to which California’s parole boards practiced racial discrimination in granting parole. Obviously I am VERY against AI in many contexts, but it’s good to realize the ways AI can be used in ways that don’t use massive amounts of energy, that don’t steal work from other people, and that gets results that are a net positive for society. Wish big tech companies would get on that instead, but that wont get them money or power, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And lastly I just finished Make Me Better by Sarah Gailey. It’s just a really good book. yeehaw

ok bye!!! go and read a book!!!!

Listening: Detective by Solveig Sandness, who managed to make a jpop album somehow

Watching and Reading: look above, sweetheart!

Playing: Rhythm Heaven Groove!!!!!
