The Superzine Newsletter, which feature the goings on of Eric Kim

:: message. Welcome to the first official Superzine newsletter! I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do here, so until I figure it out, I’m treating it like a journal that I’m forcing all of you to read. Sorry!

:: film. Anora: I thought Anora (2024, Baker) was pretty great, mostly for the performances and the degree that Baker was willing to engage with his cities. His ability to infuse the film with such intimacy is pretty incredible, and recalls filmmaking from the 70s for me. A big tip of the hat to my friend Andi for bringing me and my partner out to this, because it really was a great experience.

:: best of 2024. well...I didn't really watch a lot of films that were made IN 2024, so I'm useless with this. But if the films that I saw in 2024 that I thought were great, I'd say that The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928, Dreyer) and LA Confidential (1990, Hanson) were great. I do have thoughts about Megalopolis (2024), but that can probably wait for another day.

The big winner for 2024? Silent film! Thanks to the film course, I'm getting a huge new appreciation for it. The past few days were spent watching and enjoying Chaplin, Keaton and Lloyd, but also stuff like The Goddess (1934, Yonggang) which continues to influence Chinese cinema (eg. The Last Tycoon (2012, Jing), and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920, Wiene), whose concepts and visuals I sometimes see creeping into things as far as anime (eg. Fist of the North Star / Hokuto no Ken (1986, Ashida))...maybe this is stuff that I'll talk about in later newsletters! Who knows.

:: drawing board. I'm currently reviewing pages of an old project, and I believe I'll have a new project coming out this summer...more next month on that.

In the meantime, the kids work continues! I'm hard at work on writing and drawing Dinosaurs from Outer Space (coming out in Owl Magazine), new stories for the next Superzine, and trying to get a store up and running so people can finally buy things and show support, appreciation or disdain. The store is not as much of a priority as most other things are right now, so I won't be able to give a timeline on that...but hopefully before the end of the year, fingers crossed.

:: superzine. No. 2 is being worked on, but it’s pretty slow because of the volume of other work going on. I’m hoping this won’t remain the case. Needless to say, it’ll be fun. One story is a 6 pager that uses Wonderland as a theme; the magical console girls come back; and there will probably be another essay. More news as things shape up.

I think that's it for this month! I hope you enjoyed this absolutely random set of scrambled thoughts. ‘Til next time, when I hopefully come up with a dandy catchphrase.

:: eric
