inkelinks S01E06 - Season finale
Last one of the year! This newsletter has been a great way to go through my bookmarks and Pocket account instead of just hoarding links. I hope you’re enjoying them as much as I do.
Links
- My Engineering Axioms
I fully agree with this list. Throughout my two decades working as a programmer I’ve seen these axioms emerging in every place and project that I worked on. And it is no surprise that only one or two are technical and the rest more human or thoughtful. Great read. - Linux kernel init, translated to bash
A while ago I saw someone saying that because nobody understands how this works they rewrote it in Bash, and I cannot be more in awe that someone is able to do this. - The case of the extra 40 ms
40 milliseconds might not seem to be much, but it can actually be very noticeable. This is good storytelling of hunting down a bug on the Netflix app for a smart TV. - Syntax highlighting is a waste of an information channel
Controversial. I love syntax highlighting, I miss it when I don’t have it, and now I need more from my editor. Luckily it’s Emacs so there’s probably something that provides it :) - The RED Method: key metrics for microservices architecture
The title is a bit misleading, as these metrics are useful for any kind of application. I remember that when I was starting with monitoring I was drowning in an ocean of metrics until I found out about the RED Method. I now always start with these three metrics to get enough information about how the app behaves.
Video of the Week
15 Sorting Algorithms in 6 minutes
I’m sure you know your sorting algorithms, but… do you know how they sound? This video is the result of the amazing work done in The Sound of Sorting - “Audibilization” and Visualization of Sorting Algorithms. I encourage you to watch this video! You can tell me later how much you enjoyed it, I’ll be waiting.
What to expect from next season
- I’ll go back to the Friday delivery schedule.
- I’m also going to reconsider the number of links shared per issue: 5 plus 1 video/podcast aren’t too much but analytics tell me some are definitely ignored. Maybe 3+1? Maybe it’s also some links aren’t as interesting as I expected.
- I might set up a survey/form to gather more feedback on the newsletter in general and to know what kind of content you’re interested in. Or just encourage replying to this email with that info!
- I’m planning on continuing having fun 8-)
Thank you, early adopters!
When I started this newsletter I wasn’t expecting much from it, other than just having fun and sharing with friends stuff that I’ve found around the internet. That part was easily done, but it’s because of all of your, subscribers, that this newsletter is more than just that. Thank you all for subscribing, sharing, and just being there. I wish you all a Happy New Year! See you next week.
