Indy Hackers is made of people
Indy Hackers, kind of unique among the Indiana tech scene, has always been a community-grounded organization.
We have some sponsors, yes (and welcome more), but we aren’t a consortium of tech partners, government organizations and media.
It’s just a bunch of Hoosiers clacking away on keyboards for a living and those who want to support that sort of community.
To make that sort of thing work, we occasionally need to ask the community - that’s you! - what they find valuable and what they’d like this community to build and support.
We also need to get a better idea of what our community is - so we know who we’re supporting, have a better idea of their needs and can let potential sponsors know the kind of humans they’re helping to support.
Our annual community survey period kicks off today and will last until September 8.
Please take the time to fill it out; it would mean a lot to us.

One Last Thing

I took a field trip of sorts recently to the Steel City, Pittsburgh, Pa.
Pittsburgh is a similar size metro to Indy, but with a lot more bridges and rivers and hills. It also has two major universities in town - Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh.
I spent some of the day in a coworking space near PNC Park, and the rest meeting folks.
I popped into the Pittsburgh Technology Council - a mirror world sort of Techpoint with more of a trade union feel. The council runs conferences and events, and puts out a few physical publications each year.
I also grabbed coffee with one of the founders of Code & Supply, the rough equivalent of Indy Hackers there in Western PA.
We chatted about community and free Slack vs paid (C&S is on free Slack). We also covered many of the same issues and concerns around rebuilding meetups, the weird developer hiring market, and generally how to help folks launch careers into that market.
The trip reminded me of how awesome a community we’re building here in Indy, and in a very Hoosier sort of way. Our large universities are a bit further away than Pittsburgh, but we also have more governmental and non-profit involvement locally.
One thing Pittsburgh has that I don’t generally find here in Indiana is the corporate involvement in the community - exemplified by the Technology Council. It’s a different thing than we have here, and able to argue for data centers and tech infrastructure in ways many of our organizations can’t or won’t.
The union backbone of Pittsburgh itself is also notably absent here.
But, that’s the view from here in Indianapolis.
In the coming months, I’m going to be traveling around Indiana. I’m hoping to find more pockets of community - and also how we here at Indy Hackers can impact the state as a whole.
So, if you know folks in Fort Wayne, West Lafayette, Bloomington, Evansville, South Bend or all places in between that help shape the experience for folks like us, I’d appreciate an introduction.
