Green shoots everywhere

Indy Hackers had a fantastic turnout for our first ever panel event, Bridging the Business-Technical Divide, co-hosted with Elevate Ventures!

We covered a deep topic, and it was great to hear from panelists across both sides of business and tech. There were also great questions from all of y’all, and more than a few digs at Product folks; which to be fair are generally the folks that sit directly as the bridge between the business and the technical most of the time.

It was great to see everybody there. 16Tech was an amazing host, and we’re grateful for our amazing panelists:

Jacob Schpok, Partner & Head of Platform at Elevate Ventures

Chris Vannoy, Indy Hackers Board Member & Founder of Axiomatic

Eric Christopher, Co-Founder & CEO of Zylo

Wes Winler, Founder & CEO of Woven

Megan Lohman, Founder & Co-CEO of Plan Forward

Meetup. Of. The. Fortnight!

Downtown Code and Coffee - Kaffeine Coffee - November 7, 2024 7am

It’s been great to see signs of community coming back to life lately. Indy.js had their first talk in a long while, and Code and Coffee meetups like this one have started to swing back to in-person after several years of virtual.

More from the Downtown Code and Coffee folks:

If you're involved with developing code or want to learn how to get started, come chat with us about technology and the tech industry.

An informal get together to talk about technology and code on Thursday mornings. Topics discussed span the range from tech and tech culture to business strategy. Beginners to seasoned professionals, all are welcome!

If 7:00 is a bit too early for you feel free to show up later. It's no big deal. :)

In between meetings feel free to catch us on Slack in in the channel #code_and_coffee_downtown.

If your company is hiring, post your job here.

If you’re hunting for a job, the full job board is here or you can follow along in #jobs in our Slack. Or: Just reply to this email with what you’re looking for.

One last thing

I’ve been kind of bummed lately.

At the panel earlier this week, I had several folks stop and thank me for this newsletter, remarking on its positivity - which is great! That’s something I’m generally striving for, to be a bright light in the world.

But, sometimes, even I’m in a blue mood, and that’s OK.

A lot of has been triggered by endings, including locally the impending end of The Speakeasy.

I’ve attended so many events at The Speakeasy, from company holiday parties to indy.rb events to even Indy Hackers events.

In another window as I write this is literally playing YouTube videos of past indy.rb talks hosted there.

Which is also making me a little sad because it reminds me of the flow of awesome in-person events we had in the past, largely centered around that spot right off the Monon with the vaguely industrial aesthetic and occasionally cranky coffee machine.

It feels like the closing whimper of an important chapter in my life and career.

Writing this is also an opportunity to try and pull myself out of this funk, and feel the warm spark of the event we led this email off with.

We’ve lost things. We will lose more things.

But, we’re also capable of a rebirth and growth of something new and different.

Stuff changes, but the human desire to connect never goes away and is never about a particular place or time or topic.

There are green shoots everywhere, and I’m excited to be here and for Indy Hackers to be a part of it.

With a deep sigh, goodbye Speakeasy.

Here’s to carrying your spirit forward.
