Cut yourself some slack

The heart of our community is two things in our mind:

  1. The chances we get to meet out and about in the real. Like at a game night (more in a bit!), a hackathon, a holiday party or a meetup.

  2. Our Slack community.

The second of those, ye olde Slack, has been around for a good long while now. Long enough that we have many of the paid Slack features - history, integrations and the like - without having actually paid for that Slack.

That’s about to change.

Someone at the corporate overlord noticed we were humming along for free and now we need to pay up.

Many other communities on Slack are built on the free version, but we’ve grown accustomed to having the history of our community available to us and have started to use integrations in places like our job board that have really taken hold.

We’re lucky to have sponsors that allow us to pay for Slack for a while and we intend to.

We’re still figuring out the budget and the path forward, and are seeking out sponsors specifically so we can maintain this valuable bit of our community.

If you - or, more likely, your company - are interested in that sort of sponsorship, hit reply or get in touch with one of our board members.

Empowering Innovation Together: IndyHackers Partners with Purdue for Hack Indy 2025

To add even more fun to the downtown March madness this weekend, IndyHackers will join Purdue Indy’s Computer Science Club and students for Hack Indy.

“Hack Indy is the first Hackathon at Purdue University Indianapolis where students will come together to build, learn, and connect on real-world projects,” explains Raja Allmdar Tariq Ali, head of the Computer Science Club.

IndyHackers is proud to support this event and Purdue Indy’s goals to empower future coders. Indy Hackers Board members will serve as judges and lead workshops focused on topics such as version control and AI governance.

Awards will be provided for Best Hack Overall, Best Presentation & Pitch, Best Solo Hacker, Best Sustainably Hack, Best Use of AI/ML, and Excellence in Software Engineering..

Hackathons like Hack Indy are more than coding marathons — they’re incubators for creativity, collaboration, and real-world problem-solving that engage future generations of talent here in Indiana. These events empower students to push boundaries, build solutions, and shape the future of our tech ecosystem. Whether you’re an up and coming developer or a curious beginner, this is a chance to shine, learn, and connect with like-minded innovators and get feedback on ideas from seasoned professionals in the Indiana tech community. We hope to do more of these in the future!

What’s in it for students?

  • Skill-building: Hone programming, design, and teamwork skills.

  • Networking: Meet mentors, industry leaders, and peers with shared interests.

  • Impact: Create projects that could make a difference in Indiana and beyond.

Hack Indy is more than an event — it’s a celebration of what makes Indiana’s tech community thrive. Check out @csclub_purdueindy on Instagram for updates. And if you’re interested in volunteering for future events like this, please reach out to IndyHackers so we can help make those connections happen!

If your company is hiring, post your job here.

If you’re hunting for a job, the full job board is here or you can follow along in #jobs in our Slack. Or: Just reply to this email with what you’re looking for.

One Last Thing

While we were figuring out things with Slack lately, we also stumbled on the very first account created.

Founding board member, Andrew Robinson III (@ar3) created the first account May 2, 2015.

Which means we’re about to turn ten(!) years old.

Which makes me think about my kids’ 10th birthday parties. I think we had cake, some balloons. No clowns, but maybe we were at a bowling alley or one of those inflatable jump palaces.

I don’t think any of those are right for this birthday - except maybe the cake and balloons, because who doesn’t like cake and balloons?

But perhaps we’ll figure out some way to commemorate the occasion.

If you have ideas, chime in.

And stay tuned.
