This newsletter has had a very long summer holiday, during which online age checks have become mandatory for sites that allow porn and other kinds of harmful material. There’s a possibility of a follow-up webinar with Ofcom to discuss what this means for small sites — will update on that when we know more.
Risk assessment tool
Also, ICYMI, in May Ofcom published a digital tool that supports the creation of an Online Safety Children’s Risk Assessment, with four steps:
1) Understand the content harmful to children that needs to be assessed
2) Assess the risk of harm to children
3) Decide measures, implement and record
4) Report, review and update

Open Rights Group are drafting a proposed amendment to the Online Safety Act, suggesting an exemption for very small, low-risk sites that are not run for profit. If you run a very small site, ORG would like your views on what “very small” really means - is it fewer than 100,000 or less than a thousand? Complete the very quick survey.
