a song of breath

trans people: let me hear you breathe - i want clips of you breathing. seriously. details inside.

hi folks. it’s been a minute since the last missive. spring has finally sprung in Seattle. in this issue, i have an update and a call for contributions in for a new work, plus some updates on the past few months.

call for submissions - breath piece (deadline May 1 @ 11:59 PM PDT)

i am working on a new sound art/installation piece for an upcoming group show in June. the piece focuses on breath as expression of trans joy, and accordingly, i’m looking for submissions of recordings of trans people breathing in response to a prompt (i.e., a text score). the recordings will be then edited and processed into samples and a larger work and the installation. here’s the prompt:

  1. Think of a time another trans person made you feel trans joy.

  2. Start recording.

  3. Inhale audibly, as you if breathed in that bliss when you felt it.

  4. Exhale audibly, as if you were sharing your breath with someone else to spread that exuberance.

  5. Let that breath become a sound that radiates the joy.

  6. Stop recording.

  7. Thank the person who made you feel that joy.

the short version is that i’m looking for recordings of 30 seconds or less, in WAV, MP3, M4A, or CAF format (a voice memo is fine) by 11:59 PM PDT on Thursday, May 1. more details about how to submit (email breath@imprecision.art; confirm your permission, if/how you’d like to be credited, and that you’re over 18) and how the recordings will be used can be found on the Imprecision site. please feel free to boost/share my posts on instagram or bluesky if you’d like and tell your friends. i’ll share more about the gallery show closer to the opening date of June 12!

what else is new?

in addition to this piece in progress:

  • i’ve been going through recordings of my recent shows at The Chapel (solo) and at the Woodland Theater (duo with Jackie An) to mix and edit them.

  • i redid the Imprecision website to be more of a portfolio! more details, plus images and video, will be coming soon.

  • i’m starting to hang out around Common Objects (the 1st Ave space of Common Area Maintenance) a bit more.

  • and really, that’s about it, other than getting ready to celebrate my birthday.
