Bytes, Rhymes, Life #8: Wakanda Code Is This?!
Hey, hey y’all! I’m back with another issue for y’all. It’s been awhile, but hey, I’m back and I’m still kicking. A lot of things have happened since December. A new year. A new apartment. New projects. My birthday. Black Panther. Marvel Infinity War. Kanye wilding out. But hey, we’re here with a new newsletter, so let’s jump into it.
Software
Seeker, the easiest way to host your own job board
Seeker is my latest project I’ve been working on. Basically, you can think of it as a job board as service. With the launch of InterfaceLovers and the integration of Panda Jobs, I realized a lot of sites could benefit from having a service such as that. Seeker attempts to make it easy to make your own job board for your blog, community, or even products.
Twirp
I’ve talked about gRPC in the past. Twirp is an RPC framework created by Twitch similar to gRPC, but it ships with support for HTTP/1.1 and also JSON endpoints as well. Check out their blog post here for more information on it!
Rust in Production at Figma
It’s no secret that Rust is slowly gaining popularity in the programming world. Figma, my favorite design tool lately, has a really good blog post on the performance increases they saw rewriting a performance-intensive part of their system in Rust. I especially like how they highlight the pros and cons of Rust that they found by rewriting this part of the system.
Design
Basier Basier is the first font I’ve actually purchased with my own money. Why? Because when building Seeker, I realized that a professional, custom font can actually enhance your website in a spectacular way. Don’t get me wrong, Google Fonts are great, but the quality of the Basier family blew me away and I don’t regret purchasing. Plus, it’s pay what you want! Pretty cool, yeah?
6 Tips That Will Improve Your UI Typography
Typography is hard. Really hard. Steve Schoger always has great writing on small tweaks you can make to your UIs to improve legibility, and this one is especially good for upping your typography game. The Devil is in the details, so I suggest giving this a good read to learn something new.
Miscellaneous
Walking While Black
Garnette Cadogan beautifully writes about how in a normal context, walking is supposed to be relaxing and meditative, something serene and to be enjoyed. But immigrating to the States from Jamaica, this luxury of walking is taken away by being black in America. It highlights how just through skintone, black individuals are intimidating to other people and harassed by police, through mere existence. It is a really eloquent and well-written essay, I highly suggest giving it a read.
The Outline
Another piece of journalism that I have been thoroughly enjoying is The Outline. They do not only cover tech topics, although that’s one of their focuses, but the writing style is refreshing, entertaining, and keeps your attention. In addition, the design of the website is very visually pleasing without taking away from the content itself.
That’s all for this newsletter y’all. Thanks for reading and feel free to shoot me a message if you have any feedback. Take care!
